Thank you everyone for your advice. Yesterday we got it going. It was a fault in the inertia button. I had pressed it numerous times to no avail but brother-in -law came, tested it and it now fires up. PHEW. Now have problem with fan not cutting in but will no doubt have that sorted today. Thanks again for input everyone.

Hi
If fan not cutting be might be the usual dodgy Otter switch sited at bottom of radiator or a bad connection. In Rosie's case this occurred due to a bad joint connection of one of the Wires at the top of the rad that connect to the fan. They had been badly soldered together at some point and the joint on one had broken.
You could also run a cable to a hidden switch under the dash that bridges the otter switch, when switched on the fan will run. I have this in case off very hot weather and getting caught in traffic queue and may want to override the fan to keep engine cooler.

Very sensible suggestion. If the otter switch fails, which they do at the most inconvenient time, the bypass switch can be used and you can happily complete the journey and sort it out later.
