I understand what you are saying Hamwich and you a right that you have to forgive many of the Morgans foibles. But Rocket Man also has a point - with the money Morgan are charging these days a customer is entitled to demand a high standard of fit and finish - after all Morgan make much of the quality of their bespoke cars in their advertising. They have to live up to the expectations aroused by their prices and advertising. I too have had a number of quality issues with my Roadster - relatively small things but frustrating none the less and things which should not have happened if Morgan had a little more care and attention. My car came with rusty old door hinges which look second hand - one door was even wonky. Ok, Morgan replaced it under warranty but it should not have happened in the first place. They also cocked up the special badging on the rear deck which I requested and then botched the repair - now put right by Morgan and its perfect. The fan knob also dropped of the dash - again, put right. None of these things are a big deal and Morgan have put them right perfectly and without fuss - and that's great and very much to their credit. But they should still not happen in an expensive car sold as bespoke. Despite that I adore my car

I agree David....
I think Morgan benefit from a slightly more mature customer and one who is often prepared to 'forgive' the obvious lack of quality control. As you say, much is made of the 'hand built by craftsmen' element and now the prices are such that you expect this to result in a decent fit and finish.

Beside all that...you need a big gap between bonnet edge and wing....to slip your hand under when you are struggling with stiff bonnet catches! A shame that they don't build the windscreen with similar tolerances...so it doesn't crack

I think there's a difference between stuff that's a result of poor quality control and elements of the underlying design.
I completely agree that when one is spending 50k + on a car one has a reasonable expectation that it's been built properly, but there are elements of the design and the way that the car is built that mean a certain variation is inevitable. Certainly there's no excuse for poor alignment along the top hinge, but the gap between bonnet and wing has always been wide on Mogs.
If you think about what it would cost to have a car properly hand built to a high standard, you just have to look at what the top line restorers charge for their work. At those kind of rates, 30k for a 4/4 Sport looks like a complete bargain IMO.

What i had was 3/8 (9mm) drivers side and 5/8 (16mm) the passengers side That would piss me right off. It's all very well saying you can't see it when you're driving it but it's knowing that it's there.

Despite that I adore my car Quicksilver, I totally agree, the lack of attention to detail is a shame but it doesn't stop me enjoying the car one iota. Provided I get the good response from the dealer/factory as you have I will continue to be a Morgan evangelist ! Richard

At those kind of rates, 30k for a 4/4 Sport looks like a complete bargain IMO. I thought that point was very well made by Richard Hamster in his review of the new Plus 8 in the Mirror. The 4/4 clearly is a real bargain for a handmade car. However, once you start getting up to the models selling for £80 to £100 grand the quality control thing is much more of an issue. Both Lotus (in the 70's) and TVR found that when they tried to go upmarket that buyers become less tolerant of 'foibles'. When the Griffith was launched it was considerably less than half the price of a 911. Buyers didn't care tuppence that they smelt of glue, that the hood leaked a bit, or that bits fell off every now and again, because it looked great, went like stink and sounded like thunder, all for a bargain price. Once TVR started building their own engines & the prices crept up to over BMW M3 territory the punters became a lot less understanding.

Just checked my gaps. 2mm even either side of the bonnet hinge. Bonnet to wing gap is 17mm both sides. It does look wide, always did, but is reasonably consistent along the lengths. The bonnet corners grind away on the cowl and scuttle though, which is why I fitted some small neoprene pads at each corner, so there is definite movement there.

Just greased the fornt end. I checked my gaps which are are fine. There are also 12 bars on the radiator grill. I am going for a lie down now in case I get the concourse urge.
