Pete,
I recently did this on my 1996 4/4. My advice is to be particularly careful to label all wires as you dismantle. It makes everything MUCH easier as you re-assemble. I first removed the steering wheel and the two stalks. This makes the whole operation much simpler.
Disconnect the speedo and the rev counter first. Undo the glove box from the bulkhead. Then undo the screws holding the dash. If you have a central small dial panel, take it off in full leaving the wires connected - label them just in case!! Then just remove the bulbs from the hazard lights - again label as inevitable one wire will disconnect and you could be scratching your head a bit as you re-assemble. Remove the speedo and revcounter.
Remove the glovebox inner from the old dash and put on to the new dash. rest the new dash on your knees and screw on the small dial panel. Insert the Hazard lights and then the speedo and rev counter. Screw up the dash and then connect the rev counter and speedo. Re assemble the indicator and light stalks and put the steering wheel back on. attach the glove box inner to the bulkhead.
It all took me about 2 hours a lot of this in labelling wires as I removed things.
Have fun -- it's worth it
