I seem to remember a thread on how to adjust the hand brake (not by adjusting the hand brake cables) but by an adjustment screw / nut. Can anyone throw some light on the subject

I had issues with the handbrake on my Series 1 last year which, having shared it here, got me some excellent information.
Deano advised the following which helped my specialist :
Yes there is an adjuster on the side of the caliper, my friendly garage found it and the hand brake now works perfectly. I think you unscrew the adjuster which allows the mechanism to click forward. With poor access it was not easy to get to, or see what you are doing.
I have added Robbo's list, but also be aware of 2 issues that were also mentioned. Over zelous mechanics have adjusted to much and brakes have burnt out and handbrake cables snapped. When I advised my specialist it was to err on the side of caution.
Robbos list for brake clean and inspection
1)Straighten long split pins and tap out from brake caliper.
2)Remove spring plate & pads.
3)Remove two allen screws that hold caliper -remove caliper.
4)Remove three countersunk screws from face of disc.
5)With hand brake off - remove disc.
On my car the brake shoes looked to have pick up on them, as did the drum and there was lot of rust and brake dust which impares brake efficiency. I set about cleaning both the drum face and shoe face with emery cloth and jacked the linings out to a point where I could just feel them binding - I then backed them off a few clicks & job done....
Can't help on cross referencing the part numbers, but you may find you don't need new linings as they don't really wear, unless of course one happens to leave the hand brake on...doh!!
hope this helps, incidently my handbrake passed MOT and still holds, just, I think it is something Aero owners have to live with.

I think it is something Aero owners have to live with. As the handbrake is so poor and gets little use, apparently pumping the h/brake handle will also adjust the cam on the caliper if there is enough wear on the shoe to warrant movement. I can only think this will also stretch the cables further so to live with it (and carry a brick) seems the easier option

No need for bricks anymore. I carry a neat couple of folding "wedges" in my tool box. About 4 inches by 5 inches and half an inch thick when stowed. Open up in to a (near enough) 45 degree wedge. Rubber faced, steel construction. Cheap too. I carry then should all else fail
