I thought it may be an idea to have a spare set of plugs but it doesn't seem quite as simple as I thought. I have a 2005 +4 with a 2 litre Duratec engine. The handbook says the plug number is Motorcraft AGSF22PGM. I have tried to cross reference this number via Google with an NGK part number. The nearest I can get is NGK PTR6F-13, the site I found said that this may be the replacement.
I would be grateful for confirmation or not on that suggestion.

John,
As I understand it, the 'plugs on a Duratec are "supposed" to last around 40000 miles so unless you want to mess about, I wouldn't worry too much.

The standard Platinum plugs last a long long time. If you did want a spare set for some reason, take a plug out and the part number will be written on it. Phone a helpful local motor factor (halfords are best avoided in my view) with part number. Spark plugs sometimes have a large mark up on price, so ask for trade.

Thanks for your answers folks. I didn't realise that they were platinum plugs nor that they lasted 40,000 miles.

Peter at Beamish Morgan told me the plugs for the Zetec and Duratec engines have a 60k mile "at least" service life!

John,

The Duratec in my 2012 +4 uses these platinum plugs. I've just replaced them in mine as the originals looked shot. There are previous posts on here to the same effect. The engine is designed to have a plastic cover but presumably (as mine has no cover) due to room restrictions and Morgan engine bay configuration, this is impractical (according to a few opinions.) Weather, wash and general wear & tear seem to have trashed the plugs. Some may be of the opinion that the plugs, though looking bad, still operate ok. This could well be so, however - I have found that since replacement the car starts better. Maybe I had a duff one - but it's worth mentioning that when running, the car was perfect and 'starting' was only affected noticeably but mildly (churning starter rotations as opposed to instant or near enough.)
The plug-change was at 10,557 miles using -
NGK: Platinum TR6AP-13 stock no. 5809

Hope this is of some use to you.

Thanks a lot Mark. What prompted my post was an article I read on this forum whereby all four plugs on a Duratec engine were shown to be completely shot. They were very rusty even to halfway down the thread.
I'll look for a set of NGKs just in case.
As a Morgan virgin it seems odd that washing or rain can reach the coils/plugs.

John,

Yes seems bonkers that there's such a deterioration etc. My lower bonnet side venting is designed to feed air in as opposed to venting air out - ie the slots are flat open forward on the outside with the risen louvers to the inside. I think this exacerbates the situation feeding weather in etc. You might find yours are the reverse. You may also find your plugs are fine and this may be a part of that. Happy exploring anyway. The Platinum plugs are much cheaper than they were some years back so I guess there's some good news!

Cheers

My -99 Zetec 1.8 miss fired at low revs and a bit of throttle. Probably the spark was weak and couldn't cope with to much fuel - ran well otherwise. Only about 12k miles on the clock. They looked good from the 'outside' though...
