I want just that bit more noise out of my car and the obvious answer seem to be to remove the cats. Yes I'll have to have them put back in for the MOT, but other than that, I can't see any downsides?

Tiny bit more oomph I'd imagine and a goodly amount of noise.

Is this a common thing for Morganauts to do?

I just did my 97 plus 8 last week , the reason was to get rid of a heat source , stands to reason that there will be less restriction in the exhaust but I think the power gain will be imperceptible , there Is for sure more noise ,I have a full stainless librands exhaust system, but at small throttle and low load it's still quiet .if you have an injected rover be sure to change the tune resistor which will give you the correct mapping .
I am quite happy with the results

Is it legal, what happens if you get pulled?

It's not legal, but you won't get caught unless there's a roadside emissions check, and although you do see them, they are very rare. For me, it's too much trouble to bother, but you will presumably get a bit more power with less restriction in the exhaust. I would be more wary of taking a car into Europe like this. The last thing you want is to be impounded or crushed.....

When I substituted the Cat. for a straight length of pipe, on my old Caterham 2.3 Duratec. it made so little difference to noise and performance that it hardly seemed worth doing. The main reason I did it, was that with an open exhaust system, the cat. was so ugly that it pained me every time I looked at it.

I suspect you will find that the noise increase is barely noticeable.

Get yourself a Librands sport system. I did to my Roadster which before that sounded like a Peugeot or similar.

Thanks Dave - can you supply anymore detail about that? I had the car rolling roaded when the new chip and manifolds went on, will removeal of the cat bugger things up..?

Chances of being caught... effectively zero. If it fails roadside emissions, all you'd get is a rectification notice I'd imagine. Why would plod care anyway? Theoretically all cars are supposed to be standard smile

Hard to say - I removed two from my Aston and it sounds like the end of the world! I expect it varies car to car...

Among the Skyline fraternity it was one of the first things you did when adding any performance enhancements. It made little or no difference to the sound levels or quality.

Marcos , removing the cats will definitely not bugger things up. Hard to put a number on the noise but I would guess mine is 50% louder when on the gas and just as quiet when cruising at any speed , also probably 25 % more burble at idle .hope that makes sense .
No matter what chip you have it will contain mapping for with and without cats . The appropriate map is selected by changing the tune resistor , you should have a white one that measures 3900ohms assuming you have a uk spec car , the one you need is 470 ohms 0.5 watt . These are very common and cost about 10 p each .
If you pm me your e mail I will send pics and instructions , can't figure out pics on the forum . I must get the kids to show me one day .
