I don't know much about the Wine Society, however, I have been using Laithwaites for about the last 10 years and find them to be very, very good both in service and the selection of wines. You can drink your way around the world at very reasonable prices.

They also trade as The Sunday Times Wine Club and ( the one I use for Airmiles ) British Airways.

Have a look on the net, they also send out a monthly magazine which usually has some good offers.

Been using Laithwaites for a long time but friend reckons the wine society are better. Looking at their website difficult to say and hence my post. Laithwaites have never let me down either with my own deliveries or gifts of wine. Nothing like talking to someone who uses a service

My folks have been members of the Wine Society for years. I guess the whole thing might have been slightly superseded since the internet revolution brought so much choice at the click of a mouse, but as it is a mutual society, the object is to provide members with good & interesting wines at reasonable prices rather than turning a profit. The buyers have a good reputation & I think you can be fairly confident that they won't offer you any duff wines.

I don't know if the Wine Society offer the same as Laithwaites,i.e. if you don't like a wine, don't pay for it. I also have a feeling that the W S major on French wines which are a bit old world for modern drinking tastes and habits.

Like Reg I don't know much about the wine society. However I've been a member of the Sunday times wine club for many years and can't speak too highly of them. I guess their focus is on cheaper wines for immediate drinking but they also supply wonderful rare and fine wines. Customer service is faultless and delivery very rapid. I particularly like that they email you to keep you informed of progress with your order. I've found the telephone sales staff by and large to be very knowledgeable and they go to some lengths to seek out that 'special' wine or vintage when you need it.

I have used Laithwaites and also Virgin but have recently found NakedWines. They have some wonderful stuff and also an investment angle which is nice. I can recommend many of the wines on the site (hic)

Worked in the Wine Trade for ten years. Wine Society have better wines and service than most companies, Majestic might be close.
Be careful of anyone who says you will make money investing in wine unless you are buying first growth claret en primeur by the case and storing it properly,

Agree re the investment (in a dark cellar) angle.

This is a more innovative investment in new wine makers to bring them to market. You join and can buy wines generally, they have some excellent wines. You can join and commit to spending £20/month min on standing order and become an "angel" which means they use your funding to invest in smaller new producers. You get better pricing as well as part of this.

Maria and I enjoy the New Zealand Sauv.Blac and they have a couple which are really excellent. There are a lot of £60 first time vouchers around. I have a couple spare if anyone wants to try some.

Like Alistair, recently moved to Naked Wines, think they charge 10% commission and the rest goes to small independent makers.
