Be glad you did not do this in Norway. The fine would have been Aus $ 294.

The speedometer may show too much. Showing too little is illegal.

GoMog VDO speedo calibration

If not, there are other guides to calibrating electronic speedometers.

Thanks for the link Martyn. I tried this one a few months ago when it appeared as a possible solution but no joy, there was no caliberation access using the stalk button. The system is similar to the one used by Lotus and the speedometers on the Elise and Europa S I had were spot on. It should be an easy job to caliberate with the correct info and access. I will have a search sometime.

In the UK the Police will not normally prosecute for speeding unless you are driving at the limit plus 10% plus 1 mph.

Allowing for an average 3% speedometer error on older cars - modern ones are better - that means to be caught the speedo will be showing 35mph.

I am not particularly concerned about the legalities of a badly caliberated speedo, it just annoys me that my speedo is 8% out, in the "legal" window still but niether the factory or the dealer will do anything about it, as it is "legal" if it is less than +10%. It is just bad engineering that they are happy that it is "legal" rather than right. As I have said before, it must be just a small matter of a recal with the correct datum number to make it work accurately. Lotus manage it! I can even sort it out on my bicycle computer but it seems to be beyond Morgan and the dealers.

Speedo re-calibration seems to be quite common in the bike world by fitting a gizmo between the wheel sensor and the speedo. Just wondering if anyone has fitted something like the 12 O'Clock Labs SpeedoDRD or the Healtech SpeedoHealer to sort out the problem?

Had my speedometer re calibrated at the factory a couple of weeks ago, it was under reading and therefore illegal. Don't know if the 3W uses the same make of gauge but if it does you can't reset yourself even though the website suggests you can. My speedo now shows V3 on startup although I can't recall anything appearing before.
One tip to check whether it's the front wheel sensor or the analogue gauge is to compare the digital readout with the analogue one. If they are the same, and it's incorrect, then the pulse setting needs to be changed but if they differ it's likely that the analogue gauge needs adjusting. Either way it's back to the factory because the dealers haven't got the kit to fix it.

I've had this response from Healtech:

Just waiting for a reply from 12 O'Clock Labs now as the SpeedoDRD is around half the price of the SpeedoHealer...

On my new M3W, the spedo is off ~10%, perhaps closer to 8%, reading high. An indicated 45 is closer to 40. Based on this older thread, this is a somewhat common issue.

Has anyone successfully re-calibrated the spedo or is there a known way to get it closer to accurate?
