Today i went out and got my first greese gun and some grease. I jacked up the car foung the nipples and cleaned off some grease from arounf the entire area. I applied the nozze, held it in place and gave a few hand pumps on the gun. The result seemed to be just a big spludge of grese around the nipple.

Is this normal, is grease actually going into the nipple, how can i check this has actually occured. How many time should i pump the gun.

Done abit of a seatch on the forums but couldnt find anything that actually explained what it sould look like and if this is normal

The grease should not come out around the nipple. Make sure that the nozzle is straight on the nipple.

Did you engage the nipple correctly. It should give a slight click as the nozzle fits over the nipple. If the suspension has been greased properly before, then 3 pumps should be more than enough. You have to make sure that no grease comes into contact with the disc brakes.

Before you do what Neil suggests, it is worth checking that the spring-loaded ball valve at the tip of the nipple is not stuck. A gentle prod with a small Posidrive screwdriver will free it.
Also make sure that the nozzle of the grease gun is square on to the nipple.

lopesd,
I found the same problem when I first tried to grease my nipples, my solution was to buy a simple grease gun, not a lever operated one, and then I had no more problems.
It would seem that the other gun I had bought didn't quite fit the nipples thereby giving me the same problem you seem to have.

Knowing comes with practice. When working properly you will feel resistance at the handle. If it comes out round the edges, try a thin piece of cloth over the nipple. It will seal the edges, but the grease will still pass through in the centre.

Best tip I ever got was to press the tiny ballbearing with a big needle before engaging the grease gun, as Budster says. Then you will feel when the grease is going in through your hand, as Dave says.
