Thanks for the links AQM, the Dutch ones are particularly informative. Still waiting for my S&S engine manual to arrive. I hope I never have to use it but I like to know what is happening inside.

So ein mist! But i would request a new engine as well,one never knows what the future might bring,and i'd never trust this engine again..

This looks quite awful, the words blue lights and visits to the toilet come to mind!
Would this type of failure not invoke the sale of goods act as not being of a quality/standard suitable for the purpose for which it is designed.
I would be screaming for a new engine, who can say with certainty what might have been damaged and what could go wrong in the future.

Indeed. The force needed to punch that hole in the cover must have been tremendous. An equal force would have been exerted upon the plate to which the pulleys are secured. Even if it hasn't cracked it may have been weakened, something that may not show up until the car is out of warranty.

In the shape of things the load that a thread exerts to punch a hole like this in a non-load bearing alloy cover are probably not that great. It is a crankshaft nut that will have some mighty axial load thrust bearings on an engine like this I am sure. It's a good robust engine but it's assembled by humans, just like the rest of the car, so things may go wrong now and then. Poor assembly I can manage but bad design.....

No need for a new engine unless the errant nut has run amuck, should be a straightforward repair.

Great info AQM...I learned a lot reading those posts! Good to know that the S&S is a non-interference engine, in which case I'll throw my hat into the ring and say that I also don't think this is catastrophic. Though I'd probably want the entire timing gear assembly replaced as a precaution....

This has happened before and will happen again. The torque on that bolt is insufficient... and it needs Loctite (despite what S&S claims).
