So whilst Dave W does the 'how tos' for the technically minded, as a lifetime company car owner who has only just learned what a grease gun is, I thought I'd do an easy one first for the mechanically challenged.

Experienced Morgan owners please look away now blush.

So given the dark nights are drawing in, I hadn't been very impressed by the standard headlights on Morgana last winter, so I thought it was worth investing in some new headlamps and new bulbs from Librands and four LED sidelights from ebay. Skill level required for this modification is zero!

Headlamps
Nightbreaker lamps

I got four of the following LED bulbs from ebay; search for:
9 SMD LED HID White 233 T4W BA9S Bayonet Side Light Lamps 12v

These seem to be the most powerful ones that will fit in both the wing lights and the headlight fittings; I got four of them for £15.37 - bargain!

First I changed the sidelights on top of the wings with the LED bulbs. The difference is quite impressive (see photos later).

Next the headlights (this was much easier the second time!)

1. Unscrew the big screw that you can feel at roughly 5/6 o'clock. Carefully lever off the chromed head light surround; the rubber strip that stops any rattles will undoubtedly drop off; not to worry, this is a Morgan!

2. Next unscrew the smaller screw in the headlight that is at roughly four o'clock. Do not touch ANY of the other screws at this point as it could either change the aligment of the lights or result in bits you don't want to fall off right now falling off. The headlight should now turn slightly as a unit and pop out.

3. Unplug the main three way plug from the back of the headlight. There will still be two cables left that link to the sidelights

4. Carefully lift off the rubber shroud and I found it easiest to use a screwdriver to gently remove the sidelight from the headlight housing (rather than disconnecting the wires using the banana plugs). In my case this was easier because the banana plugs had been soldered to their contacts!

5. At this point you should have a standalone headlight unit and a side light bulb still through the rubber shroud. Now is as good a time as any to switch the sidelight bulb for the LED replacement.

6. Now find a convenient kitchen table to sit down at and with appropriate disapproving glances from the good lady wife/significant other, disassemble the headlight chrome surround by removing the three small screws.

7. In my case I also levered out the original sidelight bulb and fitting that came with the light.

8. Once done, un-clip the springs and fit the new bulb (being careful not to touch it). Reassemble headlight whilst still at well lit kitchen table (if those small screws fall under a dark car, they are a right bugger to find)

9. Ensure that when fitting the surround and the bulb that you match orientations with the one that you are replacing (i.e. the sidelight is in the same orientation as the bulb and the surround as the original). There may only be one way of putting it together, but at least this way I knew it was the same way round!!

10. Back at the car I now pushed the new LED bulb and the old sidelight fitting into the hole in the reassembled headlight. Then back on with the rubber shroud and reconnect the headlamp plug. With a bit of careful levering, the new headlight pops back into place.

11. Probably a good time to check if the sidelights and headlights work!

12. Reapply the anti vibration bit of rubber (I used a fast tak spray that I had lying around) and put the four o'clock screw back in. Replace the chrome surround, ensuring that you line up the 5/6 o;clock screw (the little dimple on the chrome surround should be at 12 o'clock) and now replace the final screw.

13. Job done; stand back and be dazzled by white rather than sulphurous light.

So was it worth it? Well the transformation of the side lights (by replacing the wing and side lamps in the headlights with the LEDs) is big improvement in the visibility of the car; plus there is a nice uniform look to the two (at at just over £15 for the four LEDs, rather good value too!). Given that the sidelight power consumption is now less than 4W, then they will make good running lights throughout the winter:

In contrast the replacement of the headlamps and headlights has resulted in headlights that subjectively look a lot brighter and clearly whiter, but the camera was not able to really see much of a difference. Will be interesting to see if they make a major difference when driving. They certainly seem more focused than before.

Nice post Richard.

I changed to Cibie a month ago and thought at the time that it would have been a good idea to change to LEDs together with the running lights but wasn't sure on the bulb replacement.

So thanks.

As regards the results I had already fitted the Nightbreaker Lamps before changing the lens and for sure the Cibie made a real difference to the focus and spread of the light.

Oh no another case of Morgan illness it comes on you and without knowing you are trapped spending your life in the garage . Its ATTACKED your wallet you now have the bug and no cure known . You may as well say goodbye to your wife and kids because before long you will be having your meals in the garage , going to bed and dreaming of Morgana talking about her in your sleep . Getting covered in grease, underseal, wax ,etc looking like a tramp and enjoying it . Then there is the worry that your kids are growing up they will one day want to sit in the drivers seat and take over and you are no longer the owner just the keeper in their minds . I cant go on with this its killing me I am off to my garage to sniff the leather and smell the oil . somestick innocent

Good write up. I could have used that myself yesterday when I changed my own H4 lamps. I also changed them to Osram Nightbreaker Plus lamps. I have been using these is all my motors for some time now. Much brighter beam than original equipment. Anyone doing similar, make sure you get the ones that say "Extra Lifetime" the same as the ones that Richard fitted, as lifetime is definitely shorter with these performance lamps.

I would add that it is best to you have everything to hand or have a work platform level with the headlamp to support the headlamp otherwise the headlamp would be supported by the sidelight cables and the headlamp touching the bodywork. Not a good idea.
Another tip. Assuming the old beams were correctly aligned, on a flat wall/ garage door mark the position of the beam pattern (I use masking tape) so when the new bulbs are installed compare against the marker and adjust accordingly.
I just need to get out for an evening trip to see the improvement for myself and to decide whether or not I need to fit driving lamps.

I was wondering some time ago at fitting these conversion units to combine sidelight and indicators in the running lights..

SVC Running light conversion

It would be good to substitute a push fit LED for the side light as well. Any ideas what size they would be?

Great post Richard, I really wished I had these instructions available when I changed my H4 bulbs for Osram Nightbreaker Plus lamps. I made the mistake of unscrewing the alignment screws to remove the unit. Should be fun at the next MOT!
