Perusing the handbook for my NAS 2003 Plus 8 reveals that I should use some form of Hypoy 90 in the rear axle as (and feel free to smirk) unbeknown to me it apparently has a limited slip diff........does anyone know if GL-5 80W-90 gear oil is OK to use? The blurb on the container reads ".....where API GL-5 or MT-1 lubricants are specified. Can be used to make-up or refill Limited Slip/Positive Traction rear axles....."

Out here in the Colonies using that in both the diff (2.1 US Pints) and the gearbox (3.36 US Pints) would coincidentally and happily save having to buy 4 pints each of two differing flavors, but obviously if GL-5 is not up to snuff for the diff then so be it.

Be very careful using the wrong oil could expensive!

I use Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 in my plus 8, if you are in North America there is a lst of alternatives.

Thanks for the article although the statement "Later BTR are technically spec'ed to last 40,000-80,000 miles without a fluid change" could be somewhat at odds with the handbook! (which recommends changing at 5,000 and never more than 10,000 miles)

I assume "later BTR" would include 2003 - ?

I think DaveW's answer on the other thread covers it of, personally I would change the oil at least every 10k. I will do mine a little more frequent than that as I am a firm believer that regular fresh oil in engine, gearbox and axle extends life.
