Lotus needs to bring back the Elan. It was a fantastic car. Just because Mazda builds something like it (and now too big), doesn't mean Lotus shouldn't revive the original.

Most of you know the agonies I've been through this year. The Elise for me would have made a great tourer, and would have been different to the Roadster in many ways. I've driven two. Neither gave me a wow factor which was a big surprise, and both had what I would describe as woolly gear selection. They are very appealing cars, especially the Sc or later S, but a lot of my enthusiasm is based on Lotus in the late sixties and early seventies, and seeing Chapman and his drivers in action first hand over many years.
The badge is now terribly de-valued due to all sorts of influences, but for me it still shines bright. The TM visit to Hethel was probably one of the top three TM events over the last five years. An astonishing day out from the outset, ending with Bob Dance (Clarks mechanic) and Clive Chapman at CTL. But the price of merchandise in the factory shop was utterly ridiculous and completely out of synch with the real image of Lotus today.
Once I'd lost the "battle of the bulge", I seriously considered a classic Elan but in the end I don't (at present) have the nuts to take one on. Lotus pricing is also too high in my opinion, but that wouldn't have made a scrap of difference. I doubt a new small Elan would sell in numbers, because buyers of the Mx5 are unlikely to understand what Lotus is about, and the market for small rear drive two seaters must be equally small. Caterham should have another go, but it's the wrong badge.

I doubt that another Elan would pass any current safety tests...side impact in particular, without making it both wider and heavier....much like the MX5 in fact! And indeed, the final Elan M100 was more akin to the MX5 in size although even wider.

I've had a Mk 3 MX5 and was impressed with it...and i've driven a couple of original Elan Coupes over the past couple of years and if they were not both overpriced I would have bought one. I just love the petite feel of them.

I'm sorry but I just have to lie down in a darkened room and take an aspirin.

I think that is it....
Lotus = Bird Puller
Morgan = Gentleman's Drive

Don't know about that. I drove through town the other week and stopped at traffic lights.

It was only about 6.45pm, but a group of girls out on the town (a bit too early) wine were walking past and one of them took a liking to the MOG and tried to climb in.

I was terrified she was going to scratch the running board with her high heels. ooo

Fortunately, the lights changed and I was able to drive off before she got her leg over. drive

I must leave more room in my passenger footwell / seat... laugh2

All I seem to get are the neighbours kids and the local paperboy - but they do all shout "Nice car!" grin2
