I can understand changing out the BB because of a leak, but are most changed out because of the noise? Are there really some out there that don't make any noise? I guess what it really boils down to is just how much noise we are willing to live with?

I have ridden in a 2012 M3W that was quiet, so they do exist. Imagine the owners facial expression when he rode in mine.

Yes, my first car, a 2012 Three Wheeler had a lovely quiet BB, I didn't appreciate how good it was, until I bought my, supposedly improved 2013 car, which sounded like a box full of nuts going around and around. They eventually changed this, after taking weeks and weeks to decide if it was bad enough, and the next one wasn't bad, until an hour or so into a journey, when it was good and hot, when the whining would get really loud. I sold it shortly afterwards, just before the compensator gave up, and with the rear pulley on its' way out too. The dealer then fitted a new compensator and pulley as far as I understand.
