Read a nice article in the NYT about the French dilemma between state benefits and tax.

It's a problem.

My car's been laid up for three weeks now, because of the weather.
Rain almost every day. And one morning frost.
It´ll always be insuranced though.
Because when one of these cold dry salt free winter days come, I will carry down the battery, install it, and drive around town enjoying. Stop to buy groceries, and then drive home again. Top down of course.

The option does not exist in Italy because the tax is a property tax, not a road tax. You have to pay it even if the car is off the road for the whole year. However historic vehicles (over 20years) are exempt and only pay a road tax of €30.

The cost of insurance of historic vehicles is also much reduced. For newer vehicles it is possible to insure them for only 6 months or to suspend the insurance for up to 6 months. Many motorcyclists take that option.

I have never SORN'd and, recently having heating pads installed in the seats, I don't intend to. I am one of those who believes a car should be used, and I really enjoy being out on crisp winter days. 50 miles or so out to a country pub, hot soup, and great drive back again. Lovely Jubbly!

In Northern Italy it is obligatory to have winter tyres or chains on board from mid November until the end of March. I have just bought the cheapest and smallest set of chains I could find. Not because I intend to ever use them but so that if I get a control I can show that I have them. I'm not even sure that you can use chains on a Morgan.

No SORN for me. Apart from when the roads have been salted I will use the car on nice days during the winter.

Well you know me, guys. Henrietta was used for 350 days in last 12 months ( 2 x snow days, 3 x floods and 2 x 5 days in camper van for missing 15 days) and should be similar each year.

Mind you, the roof stays ON at 3/4/5 am - especially after being stopped by cop last spring at that hour !!

Henrietta probably wont hold her purchase price (!), but I reckon that the equivalent depreciation cost will be about £5 per day/use over a ten year period : and would I pay a fiver to hire a Morgan every day? You betcha!!
