Ian, I'll be there as well tomorrow tracking down a pair of Cibies.........hope we don't end up fighting over them!! I've just ordered the bulbs.

Dave....I agree, uprated bulbs won't do a lot for the performance of the Tribars, the lens design is not exactly state of the art...more like state of the Ark; typical Lucas. As a lot of the light is scattered, more powerful bulbs may make things worse in rain or fog. I'm going to keep them for Summer use...its only a 5 minute job to switch them.

They look fantastic though, I wonder why an enterprising company hasn't done an improved repro? Mind you the tripod will scatter and restrict the light.

'5 minute job to switch them' Jays? When I changed to the Cibies, I found the most time consuming part was re-aligning the outer headlight rim, in order to fit the securing screw- all too easy to get the screw running down the side of the lug on the plastic light bowl, instead of through the middle of it. banghead Gerry

Try some tippex on the black plastic lug and it will show up better.

H180s are certainly better than the old Wipac QuadOptics.
Osram bulbs - can't remember which ones LAE Valeo recommended (and no longer have the receipt - it went with the car) does Silver something ring a bell. Anyway, there was no doubt night time driving was transformed (apart from suffering from night myopia and nothing is going to help me from a low car with oncoming lights - except getting into a much taller one).
Much though I dislike the latest gen HIDs (from oncoming vehicles) they are fitted to 'the Mint', so I will see how I get on with driving behind them as the nights draw even further in.
'Q' meanwhile will have QuadOptics changed to H180s before next year's Highland trip...

Graham and Steve,I trust you recommendation, I will get the H180s.

The lamps may well be Osram Silverstar.

Williams sell a P700 Tribar headlight which is non Lucas. I originally discounted that as I thought it had a polycarbonate lens but looking at it again, the lens pattern is much more clearly moulded and looks more precise. I'm not sure but my original lights feel as though they are polycarbonate rather than glass and lets face it, all modern headlights are!
