All this radiator talk has made me feel a bit guilty and that aside the inside top of the header tank is covered in a sort of white scum. So I feel a coolant change and a header tank washout is due.
Could any of you good people give me any pointers as to the best way of going about the draining and refilling of a Duratec 2 litre. I can't see a drain plug for the block for instance, nor can I see any bleed taps for excluding air when refilling.

+1 for an 1800 Zetec. I feel the same job calling, mainly because I can have no idea when the previous owner may last have done this.

Take the bottom hose off John and stand well back.
Get the filler as high as possible to refill, and expect to bleed the heater - (slacken upper hose and let air come out with engine running) - very carefully.................

John, white scum is not a great sign, how many miles has your car done, not wishing to worry you but might be an indication that the head gasket is getting a bit tired and your beginning to get oil into the water hence the scum. I would suggest you get the cylinders pressure tested at a local garage to check all is ok.

cheers

Adrian, good point but the car has only done 10,000 miles and the oil itself seems quite clear. I have a feeling that the scum is a result of the coolant being squirted into and hitting the underside of the header tank at quite high pressure. I have noticed this especially just after start up.

Thanks for the tips Dave, very useful

You may have a drain plug in the block too.
