Well I have done it again this time for good. I have retired for the third time from three different occupations.
I have now seen the list the wife has made and now my 91 year old mother has an even longer list.
Does anyone need 1. A qualified motor engineer. 2. A private detective. 3, A Healthcare Assistant with prison experience.
No journey to far.

The first thing we were told at our pre-retirement course was to learn how to say no.
When you retire completely, 'the family' assume that you are available 24/7, and nobody is worse for that than 'mother', closely followed by 'wife'.
At the moment I'm half time, so can use the work excuse flexibly for not doing everything asked. I know that when I fully retire it will get harder to say no.

I keep looking at retirement and retreating...but at 61 it is clear that at some point I'll have to do so.

But do I really want to do so? I really don't know.
There are parts of my job that I really enjoy, parts I don't and the big part I like is the money that drops into the bank every month, allowing us to maintain a rather nice quality of life and save for the future. Or bail out the kids agan!

So, Votes for and Against?

Well, I was lucky enough to get ten days at work per month approved in March. This is fantastic, but the big but is that discrimination has started almost immediately. You only really understand the effect when you get it in the face. It starts with management meetings being arranged on your non-working days, which slowly distances you from what's going on. The truth is that if I vary my days I could spend most days travelling by train to meetings all round the country, but that's not best use of my time, or the travel budget.
Anyway - being at home for 20 days a month is utterly fantastic.
Only the money keeps me working, for now.

Well done David! Enjoy the time and make sure you keep a chunk of it for what you wish to do!

Exactly...I think a consultancy agreement might be a bit better, where no one expects you to be part of "Management", you just deliver as asked.
But once off the full time grind you are no longer "one of the team". That is good and bad.

Tell me about it just crawled in from my 90 year old mothers who thinks I am a 24/7 care worker at her call that should sing and dance to any of her tunes . I dont think I dare retire for that reason . Your mother will have you working harder than you did before you retired . Windows , Dyson, shopping, cooking etc , etc, etc .
The prison bit may come in handy as I often feel like finding cell to hide in .

However I think you need routines even as retired person. I have lot to do ith the Mog, I go to the gym three days a week at 0700, I work amateur radio, I play golf and I have four grandchildren to entertain. My ife refuse to stop working as she loves her wok as a teacher otherwise we could go on long stays for golf. However, she never complains when I go with my goldmates for a week of golf in Spain. Life is good as klong you are healyhy and even better ig you happen to be wealthy, which I am not.
Use the rest of your life as best as you can. If it´s work, do so, if it´s something else, choose it!

Thanks for all of the advice. SWMBO and I are going to tidy up the homestead and then travel as much as we can using the Morgan. We want to see my brother in NZ and hope to take the Mog with us as we want to stay about 3 months. I believe that the shiping costs are cheaper than vehicle hire for that amount of time in NZ and the country is made for Morgan travel.
