Retiring, even though early, at 58, was possibly the best move I ever made, and I used to love so many aspects of my job. But I love the freedom and flexibility I now have much more - well worth paying the reduction in afluence to get that.

Retired at 50 and never looked back. It opened a new life for me persuing all the things I'd dreamed about whilst working!

I semi-retired after more than a year in and out of hospitals following a serious accident when I was 50. At 55 I was fortunate enough to be able to close my consultancy and retire. That is 12 years ago and I don't regret it for a moment. Yes, it is true that my income would be more than double if I was still working but I am fortunate to have enough to get by. Inflation is a bit of a worry though.

We'll I'm 63 and finally retiring at Christmas although I've worked only three days per week for the last two years. I am looking forward to having more time to indulge a number of interests. Certainly Reginald the mog will take much time but I also want to resurrect my flying perhaps by getting a helicopter licence. I'm also in the early stages of writing a history of the siege of Leicester. (Still on judging by the traffic)

Nevertheless I will miss work, certainly the money but more importantly some really great colleagues. However I wouldn't recommend the partial retirement I've had for the last two years. I have ended up disempowered and marginalised so it really is now time to go.

Age is but a number, it's an outlook on life that counts. What's that saying.."It's not the dog in the fight that matters, it's the fight in the dog" and all that..

I was fortunate enough to receive an occupational pension at just 52, so made the most of the opportunity and left. I would have willingly stayed, because I really enjoyed what I was doing, but things changed around me and it was the right time to go.

I'm doing lots of very satisfying odd jobs, which pay the bike/car running costs, but I'm aimless and need a passion again if I'm honest.

Like others, my better half loves her teaching job to bits and quite happily leaves me to my own devices, one of which is performing 'Doggy Day Car' duties for Son Number One's woofer, hence my forum name!

I'm afraid after attending four family funerals in two years and having my elderly mum just about surviving various cancers, my outlook has changed. Providing I have enough money to cover life's essentials, a dog, bike & M3W I'm perfectly happy.

Time for wee dram now, cheers..

Congratulations....third time lucky.

When I am asked how old I am I always answer that I am half way through my life span. That will make me 130yrs when I snuff it.I hope my driving license will still be valid.

In AU they have just dropped the need for a medical at 70...

Enjoy it David, only do the important jobs on the list and put the others on the back burner. If someone else wants something done enough they will get someone in. Be thankful that you can retire now, I doubt if your children and grandchildren will have the same luxury. I know that my retirement plans have be scuppered by Pension rip offs and government changes, and I an only a little younger that you.

I hope they do that in the UK. i know that I live in Italy but when I moved here from Australia I would have had to do a full licence test to get an Italian licence. I only need any valid EU licence so I swapped my Aussie for a UK licence. Now I need to decide what to do in 3 years.
