Hi. I know from reading earlier posts that a squeaking rear suspension is part of the joys of Morgan ownership. That said I'd really like to grease the rear suspension on my 2010 Plus 4 myself rather than ask a dealer to do it .....especially if it 's a recurring maintenance item. I got everything I need from earlier posts, except one thing. What is the easiest way to get to access the rear springs without getting under the car ?

Take out the rear shelf and use a motor cycle chain spray grease

If you also take the spare wheel out you can access the rear spring shackles much easier....it all helps!

I managed to access the rear shackles having taken off the rear. However when I remove the rear shelf (wooden part) I get to a screwed down shelf where the jack and toolkit is stored. It does really look like that is intended to be removed ..... But I cannot reach far enough forward from the access created by removing the rear. Despite lots of grease on the rear I have not succeeded in reducing the squeaking. I need to get further forward. Is the shelf with the jack in intended to be removed - it really doesn't look like it should be on my model ? Failing that it will back to the guys at Techniques to do the job for me.

I take it you've not had the car from new? Saying that, I'm not fully au fait with the later generations of Morgans, but I thought the tool tray was plastic from the factory. It sounds like you have one that has been made especially by a previous owner (and of much better quality than the factory version ). (I misread that didn't I - thinking there was another wooden shelf under the parcel shelf...) I'll go back into hibernation

To lubricate the front of the leaf spring pick up points I rigged up a ~1m length of ~5mm bore clear plastic tubing onto a pump action oil can. With the back of the car jacked up and secure on axle stands, you can then carefully feed the tube along the top of the spring into the box section where the spring is attached. I admit that you cannot easily see exactly where the oil goes, but if you use a clear tube you can see when it is getting there! Then, with a bit of trial and error, you can lubricate the spring and the pick up points. It is worth putting some plastic sheet down to catch any drips. It worked for me and is much easier than trying to gain access from inside the car behind the seats.

Yes, the plastic shelf is removable. In the 2+years that I have owner my motor I have had the plastic shelf of 4 or 5 times. Note the screws are not particularly strong. The one that is most difficult to move is the rear middle one. A very short or cranked screwdriver may be needed.

All this makes me wonder why no one has produced a rear suspnsion lubrication kit, along the lines of the ones offered for the front.

Aldermog - probably because I found it easier to design a kit where grease nipples were involved!!- (maybe it was because I was intrigued with the fact that the bits were buyable from the "Nipple Shop" who then agreed to sell the kit!!!)As I then bought a tilt lift I have a much easier way to do the rears than the jack and axle stand method, so I haven't got around to designing one for the rear!!
I'll now put my mind to the rear, although I suspect it isn't as easy at all!!!
Cheers!
