haha Bach - the thing is do you know why it has that effect on you? it works the same way as dance music does - the beat has a slightly faster tempo than your heart rate which causes it to increase! in baroque times (ie Bach's lifetime) the harpsichord was the instrument of the moment and so many composers wrote for harpsichord (initially, tho it may have been transferred to orchestra in later years) and on the harpsichord you can't play long notes, and therefore pieces for harpsichord tended to be faster. so there you go.

(metallica and the san fransisco orchestra has gotta be the best for just being totally epic!)

I remember reading that Bach's music was the most mathematically complex of all the classical composeurs - not sure if this is true?

I'm personally partial to Mussorgsky's 'A Night on the Bare Mountain', Berlioz's 'Symphonie fantastique' and Mozart's 'Requiem Mass'.

tis probably right simon. the only other rival he may have would be beethoven because of course he was deaf he based alot of his work on patterns.

Hmm - bach - though fast, busy and containing lots of notes is actually very simple. My final year uni project was based on fractal analysis of Bach (and Schoenberg - interesting!).

Others did this better than I, and I've seen demonstrations where it's quite possible to reduce an entire Bach fuge to a mere 4 notes. Then run it through the reduction algorithm backwards, and get back a very similar definitely Bach sounding fuge. All using simple rules....

So yes - it sounds complex, but there is a simple symmetry irrespective of scale in the pieces.

Fast it certainly is - and harpsichord players cranking out the notes (e.g. the scarlatti family) were in some ways the worlds first thrash metal musicians.

only thing i've ever done that combined music and it. Was pretty cool, although my project wasn't quite as cool as the ones i quoted, i focussed on 12 tone. Musically a lot more subjective in terms of liking it or not! Bit of an acquired taste for most!
