I am wondering the samething. Is the rear hatch comparment cover something that got added somewhere in the evolution of the M3W?

No, the rear cover has always been there, but is detachable with about 10 easily removed screws, the trailer mudguard fits underneath and helps to keep the whole back area under the cover clean.

The idea is to protect the area below the plastic tray, and try and keep the electrical and mechanical components in that area as clean and dry as possibly to give them the best chance of a long and fault free life. I saw mine gunk up after my cars inaugural run and decided to fit this protection straight away, personal choice at the end of the day.
I have just noticed my original photos have reappeared earlier on in this thread - weird !

How do you guys solve the problem of fixing the mudguard to one part that moves up and down as the rear suspension travels and one other that doesn't (because it's the bodywork). This is probably a dumb question and probably it is already explained but without knowing English enough to understand many of the terms used I didn't get a clear idea on the solution found.

I made a VERY ROUGH sketch to ilustrate the question that puzzles me (using "Paint" and the pc mouse to draw, forgive me for the subpar design quality laugh ) so here it is.

Hi Mario
There isn't really much of a problem, the moving end is fairly close to the pivot so doesn't actually move very far and the mudguard is sufficiently flexible that the movement doesn't really matter.

Hi Mario / Calum ,

Totally agree with Calums comments.

You have got me thinking about the possibility of the wheel hitting the new mudguard on hitting a bad road bump.

Mine is still at the dealers getting the indicators fixed otherwise I would have given these two dimensions ( wheel to mudguard / mudguard to boot tray ).

For my peace of mind when I get mine back I will get two people to sit in it and another to hang on the back to deflect the wheel up and check these measurements.

My gut feel , and experience of 200 miles is there is plenty of clearance , but its worth checking and I will report back when I know.

I was initially concerned about this but as Calum says there isn't much movement close to the pivot point

It does take a bit of fiddling around to get the maximum wheel clearance without fouling the boot liner .

I can't remember exactly when I fitted mine but I've done at least 6000 miles with it in place with no problems . Mine is screwed to the bottom wooden frame without a bracket .

That is more of a tray than a mudguard. As far as I am aware all cars came with it.

The problem is it allows lots of muck up at the rear end where the leather "hinge" is. Also on to seat belts.

Below it the whole compartment gets very manky.

I believe the trailer mudguard is effective, cheap and relatively simple to do, even for a simple soul like me!
