I'll do that.

And a Merry Xmas + Happy New Year to you too. laugh There's got to be a simple explanation/solution somewhere to fix this errant problem of the engine management light...

Hi Max,

My Series 4 Aero 8 has Morgan Racing SuperSports exhaust fitted. Just ahead of lengthy European tour this year had orange glow spring to life. I can sympathise with that sinking feeling/tension. Reading was Code 001 2c85 Oxygen Sensor at fault probably post near side catalytic converter not pre(there are 2).

Mobile tune up just reset the system and so emabarked on 3000 mile trek. In Croatia it sprang into life again for 500 miles or so. Poor fuel? I eventually tanked up twice with some really decent fuel and it disappeared! A clue there?

Car ran smoothly throughout and since (last May). Relax, have another Tinnie and watch the cricket!

Hi 51plus4.

Your experience with the management light is practically identical to mine!

In the past, I had to take the Max into a dealership [for the first few times after taking delivery of the car] because I was understandably concerned. But each time, they couldn't find anything wrong and simple reset the system. And it cost me a few bob for each visit too! I would be be motoring around with the light off for a while; then suddenly it would come on (and stay on) for no apparent reason.

In the end of course, I just ignored it and the car drove (and still does!) very well without a glitch!

So you are saying that it could be the fuel used? I use 4-star (RON98/98 octane) which theoretically should be the cleanest-burning fuel with the highest calorific value available. And the reasoning should follow that the light will stay off, right? Alas, no! I can understand if the available fuel is below par as is found in some parts of the world; but not in Western Europe or other First World Countries!

I know it seems superfluous; but how about adding an octane-booster? Would that help?

Conversely the engine map may be set for a lower octane fuel (I recall from somewhere that this will burn at a higher temperature)....might warm up the cat more?

Hi Richard. Interesting idea! smile

In that case, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that the whole system may require re-mapping. Any idea who in Perth may be able to set it up? (e.g. someone specializing in tuning BMW engines for racing...?) confused2

Have a great Xmas and New Year. :santa3:

Not a clue...

I recall this being mentioned on here before, that when a new Plus 8 (??) owner filled up with a non 98 octane fuel the car was "better". On checking his manual it advised against a lower octane fuel than 98 (more widely available in Europe??).

Likewise have a great Christmas and New Year. Here's to more Mogging in 2014.

Chris,

Not sure if he does BMW, but Bill Lee in Osbourne Park does HSV racing, and he may know someone else if he doesnt do it.

Merry Xmas to you and Tony :xmastree:
