Why carry one?

Anything big enough to really put out a car fire is so large you wouldn't want in the car.

Trying to do anything with a 1kg dry powder extinguisher is only to put yourself in danger.

For racing and competition it is a different matter. Mostly the extinguisher is plumbed in so it discharges into the engine bay ad the fuel tank area.

I have a very neat one from Aldi - about £8 when they have them in - dry powder type so can be used on any sort of fire.
Very neat & fits in behind the driver`s seat by the doorframe - so very handy. Not had to use it yet - but it`s good to know it is there and easy to reach.
Register on the Aldi website for the weekly newsletters telling what offers they have & when. Usually car stuff is about 3-4 times a year.

The three wheeler has a dry powder type (very limited size wise), although I'd prefer an AFFF type as there two basic problems with dry powder. Clumping of extinguishant, so you must shake and hit it around before use and if you use it on a running engine - you are very likely to need a rebuild.

Many years ago I've put out a underbonnet fire on somebody else's car, although the type of extinguisher I used is now illegal - a halon one.

As a driver, you are on the scene, and thus can use the extinguisher early on, so have a reasonable chance of success.

Plenty of specialist fire extinguisher companies on the web, prices about a third of a Motor Sports accessory firm.

Insurance and car fires they do not pay out for the part that started the fire. E g engine fire they will deduct the cost of the engine

I've a 1kg dry powder extinguisher fitted to my Roadster. It is clipped to the roll bar under the dash, below the glove box. I've had one car fire in the past and always carry one. I'd not tackle a blaze that's really taken hold though!

Make sure you take it out of it's mountings every couple of months or so and give it a good shake. If not, when the need arises you'll find all the powder is likely to be one compacted mass that the propellant cannot force out of the extinguisher...

I know Jays has Suplex suspension but it is still a Morgan. Doesn't that shake it up enough? hide

A Halon (or its derivative Halotron) fire extinguisher is the only way to go with a nice car. It is an effective inert gas with no residue associated with it, mostly used for aircraft, military and ships. Halon is apparently only approved for aircraft, police and military in the UK, but Halotron may be exempt, I don't know--it would be worth checking.

The Obama crazies want to ban it here, but they have not been completely successful yet. I have one in my car--but I'm an aircraft owner and got it through that source. Halotron may be worth checking out--it is truly the way to go--very effective and no mess to clean up.

See https://fireextinguisherdepot.com/fire-extinguishers-1/halotron-fire-extinguishers-1.html
