A timely reminder that anyone travelling through or holidaying in Switzerland from this year must have daylight running lights on. This is one of the many new laws brought in this year and you can guarantee the boys in blue will be trying to get their brownee points and bonuses.

Thanks for that. Does that mean that ordinary sidelights are ok?

In Italy most people think that you must have your headlights on when on the Autostrada. In fact, except when you are in a tunnel, daytime running lights are required even on ordinary roads outside urban centres. In other words they are not required in town. It seems that the position (side)lights should be enough. Naturally in a tunnel or other conditions of poor visibility you must have headlights on. Three wheelers are treated as for motorcycles and must have headlights on at all times.

Italian built cars usually have headlights and position lights that are turned off when the ignition is off and many drivers in Italy, myself included, always drive with headlights on.

I think the position lights on some older cars may not really be bright enough so I would recommend headlights not only to comply with the law but for safety.

There is quite a bit of discussion over here about what are daylight running lights and at the moment it means headlights on, not just sidelights.
Totally agree it is another nail in the Swiss driving experience, probably why most seem to drive boring tin boxes.

I've stopped guiding friends on the Alpine passes
due to the severe speed-restrictions
