I have the standard sort of luggage rack, holds a case, very nice.

I've just got my Hillsalive luggage which of course takes up almost all of the rear space ad want to keep it in the car, which means the options are to have screens on at all times or leave them at home!

If I change the luggage rack type to the sidescreen holding design, does it sit much higher when the case is fitted? Does it sit so high you can't see backwards anymore or barely noticeable? And finally, is there a design/brand out there that sits lower than the others?

Thanks as always smile

Hi Marcos, I changed my standard rack for a side screen storage type, it doesn't sit any higher but sticks out a lot further away from the spare wheel, probably 3 inches. Works ok but I think it spoils the look of the car even more than the standard rack. Suggest you google some piccies?

I have googled some pics; hard to tell though without seeing the cars lined up together! Love the look of my current rack; if no higher that's OK. I guess I'll give it a try.

Best to get if from Librands direct or Merv Rutter? Possibly Merv Rutter as I'll order a screen bag at the same time...

The height depends on spare wheel width - because the centre fitting is at the hub centre. You will get an idea by looking at the height relative to the centre brake light. But sidescreen stowage lifts the rack by two or three inches, so your luggage will be higher.
It's not a problem, even with the big plastic Tourista suitcase, you can still see over the top.

OK thanks.

Realistically, for the 90% of the time I don't have a suitcase on there, it shoudn't look too different I assume? A few steel bars 3 inches higher than some other steel bars wouldn't look too odd I hope?

It's a lot of money to spend and then hate it!

I've got the rack that holds side screens: with a case on the rack you can see the case in the mirror, but rear visibility is fine.

The only problem is the high level brake light is totally obscured, which isn't good. I believe that in France this is a reason for the Police to talk to you.

Removing the light isn't difficult, 4 wood screws and a clip. But I think a LED strip brake light that can be fitted on the top of the case might be wise.

You could of course run the car without the rack until you need the luggage capacity. I hate my rack and prefer to run without one, a much cleaner look...the side screens will fit behind my seat if needs be...but I'll pop it back on when I need to carry luggage.

I don't actually have a high level brake light so no concern there.

I hadn't considered running without the rack - I think I like the look of the car with it but it might be worth a loo taking in off. Mind you, you lose some flexibility then but it's not often I;d be carrying home an unexpected large box from work!

I prefer the look of the car with the rack, but I think that is partly because it has a lot of polished metal on show due to the wheels. With dark wheels, as the "Rich Purple" photo shows, simplicity is all.

Like Jays, we run the 4/4 with the rack off, except for holidays.
My rack does not have sidescreen storage, however it has never been a problem, as we usually do the big mileages with the sidescreens fitted. Then once we are at our destination and the luggage unloaded, we can then run sidescreens off if we want.
The (Samsonite) case we use on the rack has a fairly low profile, so no issues there with rear vision.
The picture was taken at Roscoff, waiting to board the ferry back to the UK. Very hot sun, hence the "sunshade"
