In two words, weight distribution.

A battery mounted at the rear and low down is just what the doctor ordered.

That's why twin sixes were standard on MG's up to the late 70's, but these days they all change to a single 12v, and some move them under the bonnet.

My Maserati had the battery in the boot (trunk for Americans) on the off side but given that it was originally a LHD car it would have been Italian near side.

Certainly with the current range of cars there is no room under the bonnet for the battery! I haven't found that it gets covered in water or road dirt in the back.

Indeed - this one has come out pretty clean! Not sure the car has ever been out in the wet though...

Not sure 'd like to have to drive through more than a couple of inches of water!

This is why you shouldn't drive a 3.0L Roadster through water:
The flywheel is exposed at 6 o'clock on the Series 1. Maybe this was revised with the gearbox change from Getrag to Ford.

Some time ago I fitted a plate to keep the road dirt out.

A bit late for this thread but www.tayna.co.uk is worth a look. Quick delivery too.
No connection etc...
