I am not defending Clapton But then David Gilmour is hardly Clapton is he ?  Interesting debate. Both are actually extremely unadventurous, sticking very closely to simple pentatonics. Clapton has built his career on a set of motifs dropping in 6ths, Gilmour has perfected wide tone and a half bends. Is one actually a 'better' player than the other? I doubt it, it just depends what you like listening to.

Gilmour has developed a very nice intonation and a great Stratocaster tone. OK he plays very clean, sometimes too clean not a Hendrix, SRV or Blackmore sound which are awesome in their own. Clapton´s Stratocaster sound is not my cup of tea, somehow thinnish without the right pressure. I liked him more playing Gibsons like the SG in his Cream era or the Beano Lespaul.
Not that I prefer one instrument over the other but it seems the Stratocaster does not fit Clapton's play - only my personal view and to each his own.

Guitarist's tone is a strange thing, a combination of guitar, pickups, effects and amplification - but most of all it comes from their fingers. One of my Strats is set up exactly like Gilmour's red Strat, with EMG active pickups, but I still can't emulate his tone.
For the kind of blues Clapton plays, I would agree that the Lace Sensor pickups he uses are perhaps not what one would expect, but he seems to do all right. Stevie Ray of course used Texas Specials in his Strat, but what got him his tone are the 13 gauge strings he used - more like stair rods than guitar strings.
For my money, there has never been a finer blues player than Rory Gallagher, he did everything with a battered old 61 Strat with standard pickups.

Yes that is the truth and the reason why I like to collect some nice Guitars but have given up almost 30 years ago trying to sound as Mr. Guitar XY.
Once I read a funny post in an American Guitar forum. Someone, as always the case, wanted to sound as someone else, famous. After a couple of posts another guy wrote (from memory): If you own the cheapest sand amp together with the cheapest Chinese Strat, let him (famous Guitar player) visit your home, let him play your cra..y equipment and afterwards for sure you will desire your own stuff again.

Totally agree Indeed. I saw him in 1969 with Taste really close up. I can still see and hear him stamping his boot on the stage during Catfish.

I will have to give way gracefully to those of you who are obviously well into guitars however re. Gary More, if you get a chance, play the live version of "The Loner" loud in a room with the lights dimmed, a glass of fine red and the windows open letting in the last of a summers day zepher. It is truly outstanding.
On the subject of my hero, "Wandering John Mayall", Whilst polishing my front suspension the other day, well it was a very wet non driving day, I dug out my copy of "Spinning Coin" which came out in 1995. It features Buddy Whittington on guitar and is as near as I have heard to that seminal "Beno" L.P. in terms of sound and feel but IMHO nothing can top Clapton playing "All your love", makes the hair on your neck stand up.
Surprisingly, no one has mentioned Mike Bloomfield, any takers?
