I am not defending Clapton But then David Gilmour is hardly Clapton is he ?
Interesting debate. Both are actually extremely unadventurous, sticking very closely to simple pentatonics. Clapton has built his career on a set of motifs dropping in 6ths, Gilmour has perfected wide tone and a half bends. Is one actually a 'better' player than the other? I doubt it, it just depends what you like listening to.
