It has taken me over a month of deliberation about the subject of fitting a dab radio and speakers in my 4/4 sport.
Deciding that it would be good for long journeys and when stuck in traffic the next challenge was where to fit radio and speakers etc, etc..
Not feeling its worthwhile fitting an expensive, high end unit, I have opted for a Sonichi SB40 DAB Digital Radio as sold for less than £70.00 complete with aerial at Halfords.
Next issue was that one Morgan dealer told me that you are best buying speakers and fittings from Morgan as the mounting depth is shallow. After measuring the factory cut apertures, the size is 95mm diameter x 45mm maximum depth. Knowing this information I was able to source some Kenwood 110 or 220 watt speakers that fitted comfortably, priced from £14.99 to £24 99 on Ebay/ car hi fi dealers.
I have played around with various mounting positions for the radio unit, under the dash, passenger's side, in the glove box and of course the factory housing/aperture… All positions were virtually out of comfortable reach and impossible to read the fascia anyway.
More experimenting including a ply mock housing made me think that on the transmission tunnel was the best option.
From that thought I set about constructing a carcase for the radio unit out of 3mm mdf with a 12mm ply base, just big enough to house the unit. Thanks to Phil, at Allon White for supplying a 2' square off-cut of saddle brown hide, which I duly trimmed the console/ housing with.
Next...Fitting the unit….
I didn't want to pass screws through the tunnel or damage the leather, so therefore came up with the idea of using webbing straps ( old trouser belt!) wrapped in saddle brown hide and secured to the plywood floor with metal plates and screws, all hidden under the edge of the floor mats.
Anyway, here are some photos to view the end result…Just experimenting with the aerial positioning at the moment Ken Bruce...Popmaster! loosing my signal!!!
Happy motoring.
Steve
