Hi Austin,
That makes sense as the coating can be one or two mils thick depending on the method ,but I believe to leave areas uncoated they can simply use masking tape like a conventional paint job especially for parts that mechanically fit together like yours.

Page 58 of the new parts manual that was recently posted. There are 4 different exhaust silencer's listed.
Not sure which ones I've got now as I've just noticed Noisy & Straight through.
