The first Borghi dash (2nd photo) as posted by Peter really is a beautiful piece of wood. Also being a solid piece really adds to the appearance, but I hope it remains stable and doesn't warp or shrink. My MMC walnut dash is, I think, just veneered.

That's very wrong. Traditionally it's like this: Family car drivers glance down to check if they're going too fast:  Sports car drivers glance down to check on engine revs  Now, getting water temp and fuel indicators in front of your eyes is simply not how it's supposed to be. Unless this is a special "Paris-Dakar Edition" car and indeed fuel and water are this Morgan's drivers main concerns.

The origin of the centre pod is tradition, which in this case reigns over common sense. Common sense being that with a handbuilt car, those that want the main dials in front of the driver (and a slightly higher steering column) should be able to order that. We could have a quiz as to which classic cars also had this arrangement. The new layout is bizarre. In mine (2005 4/4) and I think Dave W's similarly aged Roadster, both speed and revs are directly visible in front of the driver. This is ideal. You should also be sufficiently attuned to your car to be able to tell the revs for a gear change by ear without looking - how often do you rev to the red line? In daily driving the road speed is the most important variable. You can't do anything about the water temp, voltage and oil pressure, and the fuel gauge is useless anyway.
Frankly only a race or rally car has any need for a central tacho with a vertical red line! And in such a car all other gauges are arranged so that optimum readings are vertical. I only know one person who has such an arrangement, and he is a serious classic race/rally owner/builder/driver with 4 competition cars.

Stanley also has the speedo and rev counter in front of the driver, with four small gauges centrally mounted. The glovebox also has a hinge down lid, which can be locked.

Gauges - from years ago, my pal's Lotus 47 replica had gauges so aligned, red line, 70mph and normal running pressures/temperatures were all vertically upwards. It was a former race car (allegedly) rebuilt after a major crash (at MIRA allegedly)...
