Very pleased it did its job!
We have 4, one in the downstairs hall, one in the upstairs hall, one in the spare room above the garage as it is a bit out on a limb and one in the garage over the main consumer unit and PV inverter.
The hall one used to go off quite often when SWMBO is cooking, recenlty changed it to one that uses a different technology and that seems to be much less sensitive to cooking fumes.
I also have a dry powder extinguisher in the kitchen by the door and a foam one in the garage.
Finally in the garage I have a 7lb ceiling bomb, it has metallic strips that melt at 165F and release sufficuent stuff to extinguish any fire in that space. Call me paranoid but I sleep better knowing that the Morgan is protected and the alarms will wake even me.
Battery change date is in the diary, all done the same day.
I firmly believe that it should be a legal requirement to have a working smoke detector.

Glad to hear the system worked and you are both OK.
I test mine regularly - usually with the toaster. Still haven't figured out why the alarm in the kitchen/diner area is a smoke alarm, rather than heat... And I have singularly failed to remove it from it's mounting to try to find heat alarm. All three are mains powered with battery backup. All fitted when the house was rewired a couple of years ago.
Reminds me, I have a battery CO alarm to fit...

I believe it is for new builds and that they must be hardwired.

I believe it is for new builds and that they must be hardwired. Smoke alarms in Australia Not a legal requirement in the UK, and a normal one is useless for me. An alarm suitable for the deaf was quite expensive!

For all new UK dwellings, buildings converted to dwellings, loft conversions and dwellings that are substantially extended or altered the Building Regulations require that mains operated smoke alarms are fitted.
So about 15 years behind Australia...
Again.

I have a classic story about smoke. Many moons ago, myself and MrsW were watching a late night horror - American Werewolf in London. It gets quite atmospheric when the scenes are on the moors with dense fog. In fact I turned to MrsW and commented that it was such a good film that it felt like the fog was in the room with us............ Then I saw the smoke coming under the kitchen door......... What had happened was that MrsW had decided to boil and bleach the dishcloth in a pan on the gas ring, and had forgotton about it. The pan had boiled dry and the dishcloth had gone black and was generating vast amounts of smoke. Thankfully once we opened all the windows to vent the air, there was no other damage.

Just in case we need any reminding about the importance of smoke alarms... http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/159787/1I believe it is for new builds and that they must be hardwired.
