The gears look very small to take the torque pulses from a 2L V twin....

Yes, 140Nm isn't a massive output, but as two 70nm pulses?
If a straight 6 had the same torque output per cylinder it would put out 420 NM.....

Great pictures,

Thanks.

Likewise surprised to see the bevel gears as not straight cut!

Interesting, especially since I took the bevel box on my two speeder apart and replaced the input shaft and all bearings. Ratio of that one is 4:1 by the way.

This is not my bevel box, I made the photos at a german dealer, they have some ideas to improve this box, so they opened one. I don't know anything about the history of this box.

Good to see what makes it tick [or clonk or whine], thanks for putting those pictures up Waldemar.

I'm still trying to think through the setup of the ring and pinion on this unit.

First you have to set the preload on the pinion and I can only asume that they're using shims under the outer inner race to set the pinion preload.

But when it comes to setting the gear depth and backlash clearance, I cannot think of a way to do that. The unit is closed and there is no place to place the dial indicator on the ring gear, accept for the belt sprocket, but if that's not the same diameter as the ring gear that would be off.

I can see now why some whine and some don't. There has to be a procedure for setting them up and maybe the manufacturer has some setup stand and meters etc.

I've setup my share of Ford 9" with theaded carrier beating caps and also GM with shims in the carrier bearings, but I see no way to accomplish the carrier bearing side to side let alone the preload of the carrier bearings.

Anyone care to take a guess at the setup procdure?

Word from the factory is that the bevel box noise has far more to do with resonance than actual noise levels from the bevel box itself. Hence the isolating kit to stop the vibration reaching the parts external to it that can then resonate and cause the loud noise.

Except, my first Three Wheeler, built around May 2012 had a near silent BB...........
So, it can be done.
