Thanks everyone. Lorne is on the case at GoMog! -his initial response was that this number is strangely high as well as an odd suffix.
Car is now in our garage and this odd engine number is definitely correct and matches the original 1968 registration paper. The chassis is 6805.
After a bit of traffic nervousness in the city, I had a great first drive home - 100km to Ballarat. Very tight in chassis & body and strong engine. Pleasantly surprised at the pickup from cruising around 110-115kph.
It is a great credit to the last owner who is parting with it after 43 years!
re the glovebox lid - I found a picture in the Worrall Original Morgan book of one just like mine - page 48! , maybe its a late car item.
