Sensible chap! I did that several years ago and never regretted it.

Good man, welcom to the Dark Side!

There was nothing wrong with XP Pro.
Windows 7 is actually fine.
Windows 8 is simply horrid.

Micrsoft have not completly withdrawn support for XP Pro, just for retail customers. For many, many B2B clients and Governments, including the UK, Netherlands and German Governments, they have agreed to continue support on a "fee for service" basis.
Also all NCR Cash dispensers, world wide, run a version of XP and can't be upgraded. So Microsoft will continue to support that product too.

So all they have done is pushed perfectly contented users towards a horrid bit of rubbish called Wondows 8. Why? to support the sale of new machines and the licence revenue. Cynical? surely not!

For Business users Windows 7 is still the default option. But Mac OS is gaining ground.

My employer is conducting an "all Mac" trial with 100 users. If successful they will replace all 12,000 or so PCs with Macs and say "good bye" to Windows and Microsoft.

I have a windows PC running 7 and a MacBok air. When the PC needs replacing it will not be a PC, that much is certain.

Not certain that Apple is the dark side !

Both Maria and I have moved over almost totally. When we first setup our new office the IT purchase totalled

Apple TImeCapsule 3Tb (Broadband, WiFi, Backup, Server)
HP Colour Laser with WiFi and Apple Airprint
Apple TV on 42" LCD for meetings etc (WiFi)
Extension leads for 4 MacBookAirs/Pros
Chargers for iPhone and Droids (last a day, you have to be joking!)

Total installation time 30 mins.

The migrations is a little bumpy up front. If you are going to get the best out of it spend some time finding the additional User Interface benefits OS-X offers.

Learn to use the fullscreen applications and slide from side to side between apps
Learn 2-3-4 finger gestures up front
Learn the keyboard shortcuts

Youtube has a ton of instructional videos on the use of OS-X interface.

Welcome to the freedom.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Not only is Apple taking a larger slice (sorry!) of the commercial market, but Linux is also experiencing ever increasing take-up within the corporate and local Government sectors.
I think W8 has chased a lot of people away.
Hopefully this weekend (Monday looks good umbrella ) I will manage to install my W7 PC to replace this ageing PIII 600 XP system - it really is a shame XP support has pretty much gone.

Another Mac user here. Love it. No annual fleecing for security and it won't slow down over time.

Graham,

isn't OSX mostly a Linux based product with some nice graphics?

Or am I confusing it with something else?

It has been said that Apple will fail without Steve. Yes, the flow of clever products might slow, but I suspect that Window's dominance has peaked and Apple may well become a mainstream competitor. So they need to be seen to be more corporate, less "geeky", perhaps.

Oh yes, if you can't face life without MS Office it works VERY well on Mac, it is also cheaper that Office for Windows. You do not need to run a Windows emulator on the Mac, just buy windows.
But Open Office also works well. That is free.

Yup, Unix/Linux based Peter.
Open Office / Libre Office (both free) are also well worth considering if you need to 'buy' an Office type product - the later versions of MS-Office have become so bloated they require large overheads. Office 97 was probably the last decent version...
