Hi All,
In the brief time I've been checking out the forums, I've seen four exhaust variants to date - standard (dual), sports quad pipes, side exhausts and dual oval rear pipes.

So far, it seems the standard exhaust is the most conservative re noise and visuals, while the side exhausts are the opposite and seem to have plenty for and against. Why ??

Unfortunately, as there are very few Aero's in NZ, I have no chance of checking the options and determining the pluses/minuses of the different options. I would really appreciate the comments from anyone who may have experienced these options.

Are the oval pipes custom ones ?

The standard exhaust is the twin pipes (to my mind, they look a little weedy in the cut-out rear section of the Aero 8).

The factory offer the side exit exhaust at £1,468.75 (GBP) and it should be noted, unless you ask them to fit a rear diffuser, your car will have a cut-out area at the rear with nothing in it (which imho, looks a little odd).



Another option is the Librands system - as seen here - which is a quad pipe, rear exit, system.




As for the oval tips, like the Librands sport exhaust, this is an aftermarket fit item (if I am not mistaken) and I have not seen them on an S3/S4 Aero (only the S1 & S2). I am not sure who makes it but I am sure someone else will fill in the blanks. I know mr_tony has then fitted to his car, so perhaps he can tell us what the story behind them is?

The oval pipes are factory sports exhaust for the early S1 only.
I think it's probably a librands system too.

The quad pipe came in for late s1 and onwards cars. Not sure why though.

The exhaust at the front is different... on the later S1 cars the back one of the cat's is seperate to the silencer.. on the early S1's the cat is directly attached to the front of the silencer.

The early Oval units are often caught as the final mini-silencer just behind the oval ends hang down in very vulnerable position.


If it's quads it's a Librands system.

Early systems do not use the centre brace on the rear secion as well...

they have seperate hose clip (no honest) on each pipe which attaches it to the chassis to hold it up! yikes.

Well I think they are all misleading you here. There is NO exhaust option on the series 4 Aero. The ONLY option is side exit pipes

Well what would you expect me to post? I am the acting Squadron Leader of the SPS (Side Pipes Squadron)

In reality I would simplify it thus:

Standard exhaust - quiet but acceptable (just!)
Twin sports - permanent V8 rumble (ala TVR) quite loud to very loud all the time.
Side exits - Quiet at tickover barks like a spitfire. Loud as revs rise, imagine being overtaken by two Harley Davidsons.

My preference? Ooh take a guess

Driving the side pipe option always sounds like the car is mis-firing to me...I't the same with the Sting Ray. Not a fan. OK if you following from the center rear.

Just my opinion.....to be ignored if you so wish.

I'd totally agree with Boshly's descriptions of the above systems, and with the std side pipe set up, it does sounded like Harley Davidson at motorway speed when you put your foot down

Only if you stand right next to one side of the exhaust, but the driver are sitting in between exhaust at either side would get the full sound effect, or anyone whose standing a few feet away should also able to hear the full sound effect

I personally never found the Librands "quite loud to very loud all the time", but only really noticed them becoming loud when you hit the GO! pedal!

I'm not a lover of exhausts that drone and therefore, had the sport exhaust been too loud or intrusive, I wouldn't have enjoyed it.

I'll also add that I found the sound quite melodious, somehow richer and with more V8-variety than the sound that comes from other options.

Steve, this is a question which often gets asked; therefore, I will try to get some video clips on the 19th, when we do the Rolling Road day (some static and some with ‘drive-by’).
