It was a picture of one of these motorbikes on my bedroom wall that convinced me aged 14 to become a mechanic. I took the poster to the interview for my apprenticeship, not even on motorbikes but they seemed impressed that I had not just thought of being a mechanic the week before ;-)

I often wonder what happened to my father's SS100. I still have the 1936 Brough catalogue (sales brochure). My mother recalled going at 100 behind my father. Given motorcycles are in my blood it would not surprise me if I was present at the time too, all be it in a very small way.

That really is a bit of news. Brough started making motorcycles in 1920 and by that stage Lawrence was back in England.

The reason it's news is quite simple - that bit in the article is not true!

The make was greatly favoured by TE Lawrence, and he had eight of them! All of them in the UK and after coming back from Arabia. The last one, that he crashed and died on is now on display at the Imperial War Museum. His accident directly lead to the campaign to make motorcycle crash helmets compulsory, although it took until 1973 to be the case.

Here is one I see occassionaly!

The owner turns up at the local Triumph dealer. The modern bike in the background is my now sold Triumph Tiger.

Interesting old bike, still owned by the family of the original owner, never "restored"
