greetings, can anyone throw up some info about checking the speedo drive at the gearbox on a 1964 4/4 1500 4spd? do you have to remove the tunnel cover to get at the drive/ speedo cable to remove it or replace the cable. Is there a trick or is it just a case of taking out the myriad screws at the cover.

Cables usually break at the gearbox end because that's where you get maximum load.
Typical fixing is either by knurled aluminium nut, or a single bolt holding a Y shaped bracket. So either way you should be able to undo it by feel, once you've found exactly where it is - usually towards the tailshaft. Once disconnected, if the inner has snapped, the only problem is extracting what's left inside. Usually there's just enough sticking out to get hold and pull with fingers, or pliers.

You may have to lift the cover, so you may have to take the seats out, but I would try from underneath first.

I have a newer '76 4 speed gear box and whist fiddly it can be fitted from underneath. The cable is held in place by a circlip between a flange on the cable and a slight recess in gearbox housing.

My '63 4/4 has a hole in the side of the tunnel cover to give access to the speedometer drive.
The speedometer cable clamps on to a small auxiliary gearbox which clamps on to the side of main gearbox and turns the drive through 90 degrees.
If the speedometer cable is OK the drive from this auxiliary gearbox into the main gearbox may be fractured but can be repaired.
