Right chaps, ICE question.

Car currently has a Sony head unit (old, circa 2004) and joystick controller, which mounts on the steering column.

I want to keep the joystick as it’s the best way of controlling the head unit in an S1, as the unit is buried in the transmission tunnel. But I cannot make the old head unit iPod capable (at least not so that you can control the iPod from the remote), and yet I can’t seem to find out if modern Sony units which I could buy are compatible with the joystick. What do you other S1 owners do?

Also, quite fancy replacing the rear speakers (rubbish old VDOs) with something a bit more bassy, or even a small active sub, hidden somewhere. Again, what have you done in your cars? Stealth install a must as well, really, as it’s a London car and don’t want scumbags breaking in to nick everything.

Any advice/experiences useful, including people who could reliably do the work in the South East. I was very pleased with the people who fitted the alarm, but their ICE knowledge seemed a bit patchy...

Wentworth Audio madee me a custom rear shelf installation with 6x9's in it which deliver pretty good sound.

As for controlling the head unit I have a remote, but I usually just load up a CD and leave it there on random. If I'm going a long way then I tend to have a passenger who I delegate music repsonsiblity to. Having said all that, the stereo is really something I listen to when I'm stuck in traffic - when I'm pushing on with the roof down music doesn't really get a look in!

Thanks chum.Been using WTCR for years, and they just fitted my alarm, so interested to hear that they did your installation. How much space does the shelf take up of the (small but vital) storage area behind the seats? And if it does take up room, presumably there would be room for a small amp there too, and perhaps even a small sub?

Also, what remote do you have - just an IR job, not mounted on wheel?

It takes up the whole shelf, brings it level with the surround. Still leaves room for a soft bag on top if you're stuck for space, but frankly the boot is remarkable in it's ability to swallow luggage - I toured france for 2 weeks with my wife with just the stuff in the boot. Though she did have to leave some shoes at home(!).

Remote is IR, though I rarely use it, generalyl wait to swap tracks when I've stopped the car at the lights etc.

You could probably fit a small amp - or a sub in the space available - they are a clever lot at wentworth.

On my SI I have what I believe was standard Blaupunkt Canberra radio/cassette and not sure for speakers. This unit has a small remote (ir) that has been velcroed just forward of gear lever giving full control. I'm with Mr Tony but find the sound level ample up to approx 85 mph roof down. All higher speeds of course you're on a circuit concentrating on trajectories etc

I then recently added a cable that allows me to play/charge ipod but keeping ipod controls on ipod which, is what I wanted. Oddment storage space being at a premium on the Aero I don't think ordinary CD players are any use!

You've got it wrong mate.

I have 2 externally mounted speakers approx 3 inch diameter. Controlled by pedal with my right foot.

They're called side pipes , or rather aural stimulators

I've looked into ice before, not sure about the S1, but on S3, I could upgrade the rear to some decent 2way speakers, which would would give me decent mid and treble, and also there's a storage space behind the seats, where I could mount a small 8"subwoofer box rated 500watts(cover the box with the same colour material as the interior and sit nicely in the corner, basically camouflage itself), then fit a pair of decent amps in the boot, and you'll have a really nice set up with decent bass....

Great ideas chaps - active sub camouflaged behind the seats is a good one, as is velcroing remote ahead of gear-know - really should have thought of that myself!

The latter means that I can treat myself to a decent Alpine head unit...preferably one of the newer ipod specific ones.

Need to find a small active sub (if removable, even better) - and then simply upgrade the current 2 ways to something better, with a small amp in the boot to run them (not worried about sound stage etc, so no fitting speakers in the front...)

Time to go shopping!

John - I hear you: I have four of them slung out the back: but sometimes, need to drive home listening to Dire Straits, erm, I mean something really cool.

Aha! Will something like this fit under or behind a seat, perhaps? Time to get the measuring tape out...and if not, camouflaging something so small in the rear shelf can't be that hard?

Not after massive bass or extreme high quality (wind noise and exhaust make such quests pointless) - just bass reinforcement so that I can keep small 2-ways in their original position, running off a small amp in the boot...

I have looked at various active subs, none of them really fits, but those that fit has only a small 4 - 6"woofer, which I think would be ok at low speed, but definitely out of its depth especially at high speed, besides I think active sub does not have the same hi quality as those with separate amp to drive it
