Evening,

As i am in the market for an Aero 8 at the moment, undecided on colour, i keep a weathered eye on the classifieds. Tonight on Pistonheads a 2007 car in Grey came up, but with a 4.8 engine and the front end from what looks like the later aero coupe. It has the wide mouth below the numberplate like a series 1/2, and it has the cut out behind the headlights, yet at 2007 this seems odd. Also one of the cuts at the front from the pics looks er….wonky. Reg is VX07 GHA

front end

Does anyone have any knowledge on this car?

If asking this is not the done think on this site…still learning, then Mods delete away.

Kind regards,

Hi Mark,

It also has the gauges from a 4.4 (S3) Aero and a a few other anomalies. Perhaps the advertiser didn't list the engine size correctly?

Mark,
The 4.8 engine was about in 07 and appeared standard in the Aero during 08. Also the early Aeromax cars were launched with this engine in 08. This car is not known to me but sounds right as an early series 4 prototype.

Sorry can't help but there's a lovely looking Series 1 currently on sale on classicandsportscar.com, private sale and under 35k. Worth a look?

Looks like a series 3 base with some series 4 updates. Taking a closer look at the wide mouth, I am not sure this had been produced at the factory. Looks rough at the edges and unfinished. Also the underside of the bonnet looks heavily marked went compared to the rest of the car. Take closer look at these and evidence of a respray if you go any further. Also price looks cheap even for a S3.

Demo' exactly what I saw and had me asking and thinking......home done or a cover up of some accident damage maybe.

Will give it some thought.

Any ideas on how to tell a 4.4 from a 4.8 when installed in a car?

The 4.8 engine was introduced in the Aero in the S4, which coincided with the launch of the Aeromax in 2009 (for the 100th Anniversary of MMC). The first two Aeromaxs had 4.4 engines (Eric's car and the now deceased Aeromax production prototype).

Whilst this could be a transitional car, Morgan are generally not in the habit of selling off development cars that haven't been retrospectively brought up to the standard production specification.

My first Aero was an S3 and it was a 2007 - the interior of this car and that car look identical. The wheels are the ones fitted to later S3s but predominantly the S4. The front spitter looks poor, but as they are easily damaged, it could be just a bad repair.

The nice thing with Aeros is that they don't suffer poor maintenance well and don't hide it; therefore, if you take a look at the car, it will read like a book. Even before you look at the history file, you'll have a pretty fair idea how the previous owners cared for it.

Good points from Simon.
The orange Motor Show car which is now Rudolfs was a 58 plate and while far from being the first S4 it was early ish and wore a 58 plate.

The interior is clearly an S3.

Whilst at the factory one time I viewed the orange car and the 'other' s4 factory car - this car was this grey colour but did have a proper s4 interior and may have been an 09 plate.

Speak to the seller and get the story, could just be that the 4.8 is a typo...

Can't see the vents either in the wings. IIRC the first S4 works/demo car was a green one that Charles drove down to the Aero Club meeting however that car was a green auto, and had all the changes including relocated handbrake wing vents, different front etc.

My series 4 is an early car, it's a 2008 model on a 57 plate that has all the correct changes.

If the car you link to really is a 4.8 it's some sort of test bed or Hybrid?

By the way, you have mail.

Cheers
