I have done 280 miles in my new 2014 3 wheeler and have developed an oil leak from the air breather running down on to the engine. I assume it is coming from what appears to be a breather pipe that comes from the crankcase into the carb inlet behind the air breather. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

Does not sound serious, might just be a loose connection but phone your dealer for advice.

Connections are good the oil appears to be coming up the breather tube into the carburettor air inlet and then running out into the air breather element.

Ring the dealer. It certainly doesn't sound serious, but they need to have an opportunity to have a look.

that is normal. when the pistons come down, they compress the air underneath them. but in a tight closed crank case this compressed air could not make way for the pistons. so there is a small rubber pipe going into the air breather. there the small amount of oil (coming with the compressed air)is beeing sucked in again into the cylinders and are burned. its a circle due to regulatins for motorised vehicules. same with most of the new m3w`s. but no harm is done.
cheap solution: exchane the short rubber pipe and put on a longer but thinner one on to the crank case. on the end of this new pipe, put on an small oilfilter and hang it downwards with it. period.

I had the same problem, at the factory they told me I had too much oil the cause of the problem. Advise check the oil level. I cleaned the air filter after the service and has been fine since.

At around 800 miles on the way to the dealer I was creeping in heavy traffic when the engine cut out. On restart at third attempt I got huge clouds of white smoke. I pulled into a side street & phone the dealer. The smoke seemed to be getting less & I could not see anything wrong. I decided to carry on slowly stopping several times & the smoke gradually stopped. At the dealer they found oil had come out of the air cleaner & the filter was oil soaked. They fitted & charged for a new filter. Its been fine since. My oil level was not too high as I had checked before departure.

I've seen several references to this happening from having too high of an oil level.

This oil system is basically a dry sump system. The oil pump pressurizes and lubes the motor, but also scavenges the oil from the crank area and pumps it back to the oil tank.

My question is if you have 2 quarts or 4 quarts of oil in the tank, how does that affect the motor? How would that make the motor spit oil into the breather through the vents?

I know in the "old days", including my Harley shovelhead, the oil pump will "bleed" oil pass the check ball and let oil gradually leak into the crankcase. When you start up the oil will get spit out the vent system. If the bike is ridden every couple weeks or so, there's not enough time to leak any large amount of oil and it just gets scavenged and pumped back to the oil tank without issue.

I'm not sure about the S&S oil system, but on Harleys there are two vents, so to speak. One is back to the oil tank and the other is from the heads. The heads have reed valve of a sort and let air up into the valve covers but not back the other way. The valve covers are then vented into the breather area and some oil, mostly vapors are then sucked into the intake and burned with the air/fuel. There are passages in the valve cover to run the oil lubbing the rockers and valves along with crankcase oily vent air through and most of it will condense and drain back down in the scavenge area to be pumped back to the oil tank.

The S&S could be a little different, but a little research should explain their venting system.
