I am just about to book the Roadster in for a service and wondered if I also need to think about anti tramp bars and the like. Earlier this year, I experienced a very loud and firm knock from the rear (ooh er) when I 'accidentally' accelerated quite hard (ahem).

I have held off doing anything about this until now as have been away overseas. Could this be the rear axle / suspension moving under heavy acceleration? I have noticed that the Roadster tramps when accelerating but I have never experienced the knock before.

Any thoughts chaps?

A 2013 Roadster should have Anti Tramp Bar(s) as standard. The knocking may be the prop shaft hitting the top of the transmission tunnel evidenced by the removal of the paint in that area. In addition, I would check all the exhaust hangers and the alignment of the exhaust on each side.

I am of the old school where a plus 8 would not have been tuned beyond 190bhp without fitting anti tramp bars and a panhard rod. So in my opinion, the Roadster should have them fitted at the factory from new.
However if you have a high bhp Morgan but never drive it hard, then you don't need them.

I experience the same knock in my Plus 8 Gary, but only when I floor it from standstill, so I (try) to avoid doing that I must be honest though and admit that I normally only do it when I'm taking someone out for the first time and want to impress them with the acceleration. I must try harder not to be a boy racer

I had assumed none fitted as it does tramp (!) I can check with Morgan and also look again myself once I am back. Interesting point about the prop shaft as well. I have had sports exhausts fitted so again can check but it really felt like a thump from behind the seat. Thanks again. G

I occasionally hear the same noise when driving my 2009 Roadster, especially 2 up.

My car has one anti tramp bar, as do all 3.0L Roadsters when they leave the factory. I'm fitting a Panhard rod and second bar over the winter, plus AVO rear shocks.

Good tip Don about checking the prop shaft/exhausts. There really isn't much room in that area!

We had similar sound a but on inspection there has been no 'Tramping' movement.



However!



The 'Pointy Feet' on the 'Jack' appear to have been Busy.



PS. The Messy Springs etc is the result of my random and semi blind applying of the Castrol Motor Cycle Chain Spray Grease!

Yup, exactly the same on both the 08 cars I have owned, 2 and 4 seat. I cut the jack area out of the tray and sealed it with a Halfords Glass Fibre kit, I have a toolbox bolted in the passengers footwell (also serves as a footrest) and the jack now lives in front of that. I had intended using a luggage elastic to hold it in place but in 2 years its never moved. I think its a combination of the weaker rear springs the factory went through and a poor tool tray to axle clearance anyway.

On my 2008 Roadster I had a knocking when setting of from a start and also if I pulled away in 2nd gear with my foot down hard. I looked for the problem for ages it seemed to be coming from behind the drivers seat. It turned out to be the nuts on the u bolts that go over the axle. The outside u bolt, the nuts were not tight enough which allowed some movement which caused the cracking noise.
Might be worth checking them, sorry I don't have any pictures.
