I sold my E60 M5 because on a run it would do a similar type of range. If you were lucky the tank gave 250 mile range but on one spirited run back to the UK from Hamburg, I was dipping into the 175 mile range - the result of an engine with a huge appetite and a very small fuel tank for, what was supposed to be, a mile muncher.

What size is the FFs tank Rich? 60l?

You are right Mr T - If I was getting 16.6 from that I would be worried as well. It would mean I am not trying hard enough

I thought it was quite good Simon, you can't do 200mph runs on the sniff of a petrol rag, so it's always going to = on autobahn and airfield type runs.

If it is only a 60lt tank with ~7/10 left and 92 miles range that's ~10mpg which would pretty good in those circumstances. I suspect it's a bigger tank than that though.

The trouble with the M cars is that the fuel tanks tend to be standard across the range with a bigger, thirstier motor bolted in. My M3 was the same, the range wasn't terrific if you were enjoying yourself, but it's the enjoyment that counts

I always thought there should have been a no cost option of a larger fuel tank on the M5 in particular. The range, and the fact you needed to drive the V10 at 9/10ths to make it feel quick, let down what was an otherwise impressive vehicle.

My MB had a small cost option for a "long range tank" when I was ordering it.

I had two thoughts. (more than usual it should be said)

1. Don't order it. You will hate standing at the petrol station for 20 minutes at a time and paying £150 a shot for a fillup.
2. Do order it. Less visits to the petrol station. Less time monitoring the petrol gauge.

In the end I decided the idea of spending £150 a fill put me off ! I cannot face handing over funds at those levels. Anyway I need a Ginsters more regularly than that to maintain my trim figure.

To the point as ever Dean - I see in the Auto Express they quote 17mpg but with 6.3Ltrs V12 what else could it be. Anything less than a 30 Gallon tank is not going to be too much of a tourer.
