Does anyone have a design for a replacement high vision rear brake light. I find it quite out of character with the trad. I fully understand why it's there, but if any negative comments are given about the trad, it's is always this feature, most people suggest it looks like "ET". Not a complete style killer but could be less in your face?"

I wonder if it is required by law? Just looked and it is required.

On line research suggests the fitment at manufacture is a requirement, but not required at MOT time. Odd situation, and I could imagine a car that should have one - and doesn't to get stopped in other countries where the law is different.

MOT testers often work on the basis - if fitted it has to work. Not quite what the rules say, but saves a lot of research.

Difficult one to redesign. You could replace it with a rectangular light on an alloy bracket which might be more in keeping with the car but still not aesthetically pleasing. The light fitted to the cars without a spare wheel is much neater but then of course you don't have a spare!

It is required for European homologation. Personally I don't mind it and I think it is an important safety feature. I assume you are talking about the cobra light. The light fitted to the models that do not have a spare wheel is much less obtrusive. It is hard to imagine what else you could do.

A wing or a spoiler at the back would look even more out of place, but it might stop the backdraft into the cockpit idea

These are the rules/Legal Requirements:

The 3rd brake light should be positioned to the centre line of the vehicle whenever possible. If, due to any obstruction or vehicle design, this is not possible, it should be positioned to the off side i.e. Driver’s side, of the centre line.

The height should be no less than 13.75” (350mm) and no more than 59” (1500mm) from the ground or if the structure of the vehicle makes this impracticable no more than 82.5” (2100mm).

Hood down there are a range of oprions, including on the inside of the upper screen rail, but hood up?
The Cobra light is probably the least worse option.

I did think of a strip of LEDs in a second chrome tube siamesed along the top of the luggage rack top tube, but a lot of work to make properly and it would still be useless when the rack has luggage on it. The off set mounting is interesting, I'd notbeen aware of that possibility. One on each side of the rack perhaps?

My design on my Plus 8 was to take it off, which the previous owner had done for me.

That lower height limit is interesting. It could in theory put the 'high' level light on the upper rear rail of a luggage rack...

Alternatively, if wearing a roll bar, you can affix a led strip there.
