Thanks Dan v interesting feedback.

Interesting too about HD owners experience.

Certainly puts the spot light on the M3W issues.

The swing arm pivot and the front sprocket for the belt are very close (possibly exactly?) to being on the same axis on the M3W so there is no real change in belt tension with suspension travel so can be safely run quite tight. Are Harleys the same? The vast majority of chain drive bikes are very definitely not arranged like this so some slack has to be allowed for the movement or cue one broken chain.
Having said that, the poly teeth modification looks very intriguing and could be a worthwhile change even on this side of the pond. I'm sure the standard sprocket from MMC will not be cheap. I'll certainly look into it in time when I have a new sprocket fitted and have the old scrap sprocket sitting gathering dust.

it is unfortunate that my tw sprocket of bevelbox is not exactly on the axis of occiliant arms, this changes the belt tension according to the height of suspension, if I raise the rear with a jack it relaxes belt

Since the installation of the latest new rear sprocket I no longer noise problemmes because I tend moderately belt, 6k / 7km without any problem moans and no longer uses Marseille soap

Long time no postings on this issue...

Maybe I can give some good advise backed by own experience:

I had a quite noisy BB & belt unit and was not sure where all the squeeking and whining was originated. Some definitely comes from the bevel box and when the oil gets warm noise is always there.
I finally located that most noise was generated from the drive belt.
Lots of silicone spray did reduce the whining but only for limited time and/or milage than the noise came back.
Today I dismanteld the rear plastic cover and used a high pressure sprayer to clean the belt and both spockets. I used a car jack to lift the rear end and run the wheel in 2nd gear and thoroghly washed the system. Great result: nearly all the noise is gone. When I had a short drive for drying the rear brake I was amazed how quiet the whole drive system operated.
I am sure noise will come back when dirt settles on spocket and belt but now I have a good solution for my TW: High pressure spray cleaning works on mine.!

Sprays, cleaning, tension and alignment belt adjustments may all help reduce the belt noise for a time at least but if the rear sprocket teeth are worn the real cure is to replace it. See page 7 of this thread for what that looks like if you are not sure. Hopefully replace with a steel or poly faced sprocket that will last longer than the rear tyre, my first one was worn out at 4000 miles. Also interested in how the poly Super Max sprocket is doing in service Michael H and anyone with a new Morgan steel one.

As my M3W is still locked up but I just may prep it tomorrow as we are finally getting some warmer weather. However, I will not be changing out the sprocket just yet as I still have a bit of life in the third one. I think about the end of May I will drive it to the dealer so we can swap the Super Max rebuild in. It is much easier with a proper lift as, for convenience as well as saving our backs, the car goes up and down a number of times for the change.

Right now it's "mud season", the 'fifth season' of the year in Vermont. Many roads are dirt and still quite frozen underneath. That expands the roadway. When they thaw they collapse a bit and turn into the consistency of puppy poo... You do not wish to drive or even walk on this stuff. I have a full size Toyota Tundra with 4WD and very good BF Goodrich AT/KO tires. I have been almost bogged down up to the hubs in this... stuff. The paved roads are just as bad with frost heaves. It will test the suspension of any car and your kidneys will cry. When they subside, by heat and pressure, the road has a tendency to return to its constituent parts, gravel. A joyous season loved by all!

Rest assured, when I change the sprocket out you will get the full report.

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Micheal, sorry I don't know how to use any communication devices on this site, but I'm wondering if you have an "extra" sprocket (I'll pay what's necessary of course) as I'm thinking of sending one to LA to get it refurbished and have it as stand by. hbatts@sbcglobal.net
thanks, Heinz
