I use a simple bike lock to secure the case to the luggage rack (I have the MMC leather case, enormously heavy but beautiful) and a long plastic covered cable looped through the steering wheel locked by a padlock to keep anoraks etc safe. I also have a Librands foot locker which is great for locking the sat nav camera and other small equipment away from prying eyes.

I see you are another Mog nut that has christened his car, mines called Reginald!

My car has something I've only occasionally seen elsewhere: my father had a lock put on the bonnets, mid-way between the fore and aft bonnet catches, on each side. On the '85 4/4 4 seater, the bulkhead makes a shelf on the passenger side, and a little bit of space behind the battery on the driver's side depending on what's in the tool tray. He and my mum used to lock small valuables in here to secure them for the day, but it's v important to remember to remove them before driving off! For this purpose mum tied a piece of ribbon to one of the steering wheel spokes whenever anything was locked under the bonnet... a rather tatty and elderly strand of just such a ribbon was shoved in a corner of the glovebox when I became the guardian of the car.

I'm guessing with the amount of extra electronic gubbins that a 2007 car has in the engine compartment, this is probably no longer a practical solution.

Re the Ferry ramps, I expect they vary a lot but the only time i have had a 'ching' was at low water on the Corran Ferry. Will be doing this crossing again soon so putting a couple of extra pounds in the rears, a dab of grease under the tailpipe and make the Mrs walk off……
Generally, whatever you do do not roll backwards on ramps or steep inclines or reverse up steep drives as this can fracture exhaust joints or welds as the tailpipe digs in.

As for Security I know it is is good on Mull, they caught the thief in 1952.

And for the midges, as Graham says Avon Skin So Soft works, if you don't mind smelling like an old lady.

If you use the Avon product people may think you are a Royal Marine or former RM. A friend who was a RM says at Fasalane the
marines by it by the bucketful

If you can - pop over to Islay - great distilleries!! - recommend the Laphraoigh one.
Went to Mull a couple of years ago - roads in the area are very potholed so take it easy & enjoy the view.
Never mind the midges - I very nearly got a golden eagle attached to the windscreen at one point - now that would have taken some cleaning off - so don`t forget windscreen wipes(for dead midges etc.)
Enjoy - I am very envious.
By the way - if on Mull - get some Mull cheese (can be got direct from farm just North of Tobermory

You are from Yorkshire. Even the klegs ( midge ) know you give nowt away for free. The little b*ggers bit me to death on Mull . Waste of time trying to hide from them in a mog.

If on Mull take the trip to Iona , you can feel the past all around you.

We are doing a very similar trip in early June, however SWMBO refused to do it in Mog, she seems to think it would be wet at some time while we are there....so it's the Audi for us, feel a bit soft now reading this......but happy to report back afterwards, at least I can approach all potential Mog hazards as if we were in it!

Tuftie, I had to promise a once in a lifetime trip to the Mrs to take the Mog, I expect it will be just that… once.
I did shamefully commit to having the hood up and to stop over half way rather than doing 500 odd miles in one go like i do when on my own.
She has however commandeered the whole suitcase leaving no room for my clothes. She will regret going on holiday with a tramp.

You have my sympathies. I too have reached a point where the flies on ahead in comfort and with adequate luggage, and I take the car to meet her at the other end for day touring.

Could you negotiate something similar - sending the wife, luggage or even car on ahead?
