My one is currently in for a service and is getting a new crankshaft pinion oil seal under warranty for a similar small leak. I don't think there is anywhere for the oil to go as the area of the cam belt is supposed to be oil free.
Not that we've seen tons of pictures inside the belt cover, but each one of them have shown signs of oil seepage to some extent. How hard is it to make a crank seal not leak?
Sorry for the analogy, but when I bought my '09 Harley CVO with leather seating, it didn't fit the bike. Or I should say it fit, but when I sat on it it puckered up by the tank and exposed about 3/4" of mounting plates and wiring harnesses.
It wasn't just my bike, but every one of the 3000 or so CVO Road Glides that year.
Harley started making bikes in 1903 and over 100 years later they still could not make a seat fit that that model of bike. Even when the '10 CVO Street Glides came out, they had the same issues with the front of the seat pulling away from the tank. I had two warranty seats put on and they all were the same. Harley came out with a "kit" to support the underside of the seat with rails that bolted to the top of the bike frame in an effort to stop the seat from sagging when one sits on it. In '11 they got the seat right. I ended up under warranty getting my choice and I took an '11 seat off the CVO Street Glide.
So maybe making a double lip seal IS a problem to get right nowadays.
All I can say is that I'm sorry you guys are having issues with the motors. Good luck with your fixes...
I fitted some 2mm stainless spacers behind my timing case cover the other day for cooling and ventilation and thankfully it was bone dry inside, no oil at all.
