Thankfully they gave no trouble in Scotland, except for a slight rattle. So when we got home I nipped them up. But one side just let go. This seems to be a brass casting and the threaded stud was aerated......................
The threads are a bit offine at the base and clearly the thread locking found the weakness.


So nothing for it but to cut the stud flat and centre-punch ready to drill out.


After drilling.............


Next I cut half the head off two bolts........quicker than filing.


The thinned down bolts were threaded through and araldited in place.




I may pad the back with some neoprene or leather before refitting.


So the moral of this story is - don't overtighten!

A bit like sweet & sour I grant you, but leather has such an intoxicating smell, and can be made into such useful nick-nacks.

Neoprene has been in my life long before I knew what it was.........or the benefits it gave.

For me its Butyl Tape Dave, although I was more technical than body training at Volvo we did try and cover each other when possible to keep the training fresh and I also taught windscreen and glass fitting....it was there that I first encountered Butyl Tape, I also learnt Volvo parts division sold many more packs of tape than windscreens (Butyl came between dry glaze and PUR bond, 240/245 kind of cars, early 740/60 for fitting widscreens) It has a wonderful additional use, it will stick anything to anything (well within reason) and it stops rattles. If you have ever had or been in a Volvo 480 you know what that means, the whole dash was held in with Butyl to stop the rattles and squeaks, its wonderful stuff, only available on a roll to fit a windscreen length but that will last you several lifetimes. If you ever try it the trick is to get it warm before use, about 30 degrees is perfect, we used to sit the roll on a space heater for 2 min.

I may have to research the likely benefits of this stuff.
What about Denso tape? Used by the LandRover boys to wrap their leaf springs according to experts.........

I refitted the pivots today - with a strip of leather on the back to stop the bolt head digging into the side panel, and all is well.

UPDATE: I added some leather trim at the back of each bracket so that the nuts wouldn't damage the B panel leather trim.


So the moral of this story is - don't overtighten!
