Can anyone kindly provide a step by step guide to flushing the cooling system on my black top zetec 4/4? And is it worth using a flushing product such as the 2-step Holts liquid? I'm pretty sure it's never been flushed (2005) despite full service record. Many thanks, Nigel

Normally...
1. Add flush as per manufacturer's instructions. 2. Run engine to temp and/or time specified. 3. Allow engine to cool. 4. Remove lower hose and drain coolant, remove reservoir cap. 5. Replace lower hose. Refill coolant. 6. Run to temperature with reservoir cap off until all air is expelled. 7. Replace cap, go for a run and check level on your return.
You can also run a normal garden hose in to the radiator after 4 and hose it around. Same from the reservoir cap.

It might also be worth disconnecting the heater hose to flush that with a garden hose.

Actually you need a corrosion inhibitor whether it freezes or not in your country. Antifreeze is a convenient carrier for this, although if you are determined, you can get corrosion inhibitor on its own although usually in silly quantities as central heating system additive. One trade name is "Fernox".

I just just premixed coolant....removes all effort. Lazy, its true but for the small price difference when on offer.

Specifically for the black top Zetec, where is the thermostat? I can't see one.

Back of the cyl head, black plastic housing which I think on earlier zetecs was prone to cracking. Steve
